Slr2Moons' Fanfiction and Online Reading Recs!

mint green

Welcome!! This is my third year of sharing what I consider the best goodfic, online fiction, and webcomics with you all! Kyaa! Three years, OMG! XD

I know this page is devoid of eye candy, but you're not here for graphics and lovely web page design esthetics anyway. Let's get straight to the good stuff, namely the recs!! I'll come back and spruce things up later. Maybe. So until then you get serviceable text. Wheee!

This is a list of fics that I have personally read and recommend to others. This isn't meant to be a "best of" list, or a list of classics, it's simply the stories I have enjoyed. I love a variety of story types covering all the genres. You'll likely notice a predominance of certain fandoms, story themes, and romantic pairings, but this is a list of my own favorite stories, so of course I'm biased. :3

Fics are sorted first by fandom, then alphabetical order by title. Crossovers are given their own section in the Cs and included in their individual fandoms. I only promise to warn for mpreg, incest, BDSM, rape, loli/shouta/chan, and graphic sex, which will all be noted in red type. I rate content via NA movie rules, so G, PG, PG13, R, NC-17. Homosexual content does NOT earn a higher rating compared to the same level of hetero in my book, so please notice the pairing information and not just go by the rating. I use "AU" for "alternate universe" as a blanket term for any fic that could not exist inside canon at its beginning, be the changes extreme pirates-in-space level or a simple timeline tweak. A work in progress is declared "stalled" if it has not been updated in a year, and "abandoned" if the author has stated they will not be continuing it or if the fic hasn't been updated in three years. The rest of my info will be self-explanatory. ^^ New fics are added every month!!!

Shall we???

Updated 1-1-12! The 7 new recs can be found in: Billy Elliot (new fandom!), FLCL (new fandom!), HP, IY, Ouran, Champloo, and Skip Beat. Like so many others, I am mining the treasure trove that is Yuletide and am finding some amazing gems to share with you, starting with two this month. Be on the lookout for some amazing one-shots in the future. ^^V Happy New Year, everyone!

All links verified 1-1-12 and WIP statuses updated. We lost three recs, I'm afraid! :/ The fic archive site Lunaescence is currently down. I am leaving up my recs for the fics hosted there in the hopes the site will return soon.

If you follow one of my recs and enjoy it--or if you think I have no taste for reccing it at all--I want to hear about it! You can reach me as "slr2moons" at good old hotmail. ^^

My ficrecs page has a mirror! Ad-free but sometimes flaky original server and stuck with ads but at least it's up 99.9% of the time new server.

I want to hear about your favorite fics. Please tell me about them! =D Info for sending me your recs is at the bottom of this page.

s2m's Fanfiction Recs!

Aladdin

The Man Who Freed Me by Cantare
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: Phenomenal cosmic powers, itty bitty living space. A jinni's fate, unless he comes across the rarest of mortals who might set him free...
length: one-shot at 5,509 words
setting: the Disney movie
s2m's comments: It's been years since I watched Aladdin, and maybe that's why it never occurred to me that the Genie's over-the-top personality could be an act. This fic explores that idea, and shows us through Genie's POV that maybe eternity and the human fate isn't hopeless after all. ^^

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Embers by Vathara
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, PG
author's summary: Dragon's fire is not so easily extinguished; when Zuko rediscovers a lost firebending technique, shifting flames can shift the world... Follows "Theft Absolute".
length: WIP at 59 chapters, 618,338 words
setting: AU that starts in early season 2
s2m's comments: This gloriously intricate AU deals with something left out of canon: culture shock. The author takes what glimpses we see of the four different peoples and histories and extrapolates it into an amazing world tapesty. Vathara's version of the world forced me to rethink quite a few of my opinions on the series. Also I never thought I'd ship anything but Zutara...but this fic? YEAH. I know who I'm rooting for! Vathara once again proves why she is one of my favorite authors. DAMN! XD

Enslaved by sharkflip
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, PG
author's summary: A triumphant war party returns with an exotic slave, a gift for the ruling house. Katara and Zuko AU
length: stalled WIP at 35 chapters, 109,668 words
setting: AU from before the series begins
s2m's comments: Zuko is the slave for Katara, which is what pulled me in to the story. That, and how Katara decides to make use of him! *snicker* My amusement at the premise kept my interest until the story sucked me in, and now I'm wondering just how things are going to work out. I don't think the author will sell out for a happily ever after, I really don't. Oh yes, and the characters are in their mid to late 20s, which is also a welcome change from the Zutara norm.

Love Thy Enemy by RedNovember
genre/rating: Adventure, PG-13
author's summary: [ZK AU] The mighty Fire Empire rules the entire world, after they conquered it a century ago. Now, almost a hundred years later, a tiny tribe of rebels have sent Katara, an undercover assassin, to kill the Fire Emperor Zuko.
length: complete at 20 chapters, 133,283 words
setting: reincarnation AU 100 years after an AU ending of the series
s2m's comments: This is one of those fics whose starting plot and characterization kept me reading despite some shallowness and the obvious youth of the writer. Don't think about events too much, just enjoy them--along with the occasional stroke of brilliance--for a gripping story! I am very pleased the author didn't sell out the ending. I wish she were still writing, now that she's a bit older, I'll bet her fics would be awesome!

Tempest in a Teacup by AkaVertigo
genre/rating: Drama, Comedy, PG
author's summary: Fate puts Katara in the Fire Nation to grow up in the company of a Dragon, a prince, and a lot of good tea. AU Zutara...of a sort.
length: complete at 22 chapters, 33,362 words
setting: AU from before the series begins
s2m's comments: I loved this story for its daring use of different writing methods. The relationships between Katara, Uncle Iroh, and Zuko are well-developed and believable. This is the story that made me see the value of fanfic, so it has sentimental value as well. :)

.oOo.

Back to the Future

Letting the Days Go By by Nightspore
genre/rating: Drama, PG, incest. Given the original film, I think incest is rather expected... :P
author's summary: In the new and improved 1985, Marty felt he'd been cheated out of a better life. But he had no idea how subtle and disturbing the changes he'd made really were.
length: one-shot at 3,012 words
setting: about two months after the trilogy ends
s2m's comments: As much as I love this movie, and as many times as I have seen it, the situation of this fic never occurred to me. How very interesting! The incest bit was completely unnecessary in my opinion, though it certainly adds an extra dash of "WHOA!" to the mix.

Batman

Iron Robin by athenemiranda

.oOo.

Billy Elliot

NEW!!!1! Smudged Ink by andthen (ohargos)
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: After Billy leaves, Michael writes to him, and over the years, they come to know each other's handwriting perfectly, their separate lives bound together by paper and ink.
length: one-shot at 6,061 words
setting: after the film
s2m's comments: This fic devlivers a sweet story about the friendship between two childhood friends as they mature into adults. Life happens, some things change, some things don't, and friendship continues on. *happy sigh*

.oOo.

Bleach

Blue Moon by Empatheia
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, PG
author's summary: Hitsugaya x Yachiru When the world is drenched in blue, he can be forgiven for seeking refuge in other colours.
length: one-shot at 3,444 words
setting: written early in the Hueco Mundo arc
s2m's comments: I thought this fic would be pure crack, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a touching drama instead! I never thought I'd read a fic with Yachiro as a believeable romantic interest. I am glad to be proven wrong. ^^

Dandelion Fluff by Sweet Danish Yummy
genre/rating: Romance, PG
author's summary: Ishida is not fond of dandelions. [Ishida x Orihime]
length: one-shot at 965 words
setting: this one is rather timeless :3
s2m's comments: Some amazing imagery in this fic. I already have a fondness for puffball-stage dandelions, and this fic only cements that for me! *shivers with delight*

Dreaming of Skies Elsewhere by Sublime Paradigm
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: Three years later, caught between dreams of death and the memory of a kiss, Ishida returns to rewrite his personal history. Ichigo, however, has ideas of his own.
length: complete at 5 chapters, around 25,000 words (my guess)
setting: after the first Soul Society arc, when Uryuu leaves the main story for a while
s2m's comments: This is the only Bleach BL fic I've read...I don't think any others will match up. If woobie!Ichigo or whiny uke!Uryuu gets on your nerves, you have nothing to fear from THIS fic! Whoa! Note the chapters are listed in descending order.

Let the Music Play by Moons_Aria
genre/rating: Drama, PG
author's summary: 'No one could ever say that Hueco Mundo wasn't an exciting place and that's why you loved it.' Las Noches is the hottest club since Soul Society and we aren't just talking about the music and dancing.
length: one-shot at 3,058 words
setting: real world AU
s2m's comments: Okay, I fess up. The third time I went back to reread this one, I decided I had to admit it's my guilty pleasure. I will say no more. This girl is one of the best self-insert writers I've read. ^^;;;;;

Love and the Art of War by DarthAmmonite
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, PG
author's summary: Nanao X ...Zaraki? I have no excuse, explanation, or defense of this pairing whatsoever. So very, very sorry. The crack! It burns!
length: abandoned WIP at 3 chapters, 5,657 words
setting: doesn't matter, though there is one mention of "arrancar"
s2m's comments: Would that all declared "crack" fics were this good! Completely IC, amusing, and full of laughs. I want a Zaraki-made bunny! X3

Not as Nice as Me by slr2moons
genre/rating: Drama, Suspense, PG-13
author's summary: Grimmjow can't resist the chance to see Orihime alone. The only motivation he needs is that he likes the way she reacts to him. Very much.
length: one-shot at 2,125 words
setting: the Hueco Mundo arc
s2m's comments: A character as volatile and eager to do violence as Grimmjow must feel rather conflicted towards the human who returned his status, and this fic gives us a window into how he might handle that. I also ship Grimmjow/Orihime like burning, so yeah. X3

Ouran High Ghost Club by Finite Sledgehammer
read its full listing in the crossover section

31 Moments from the Gotei 13 at the Hot Springs by Maya
genre/rating: Comedy, some Drama, R
author's summary: 31 drabbles, based on a set of prompts from Deepwonderment as part of a challenge at the 31_days [LJ] community.
length: one-shot at 3,323 words
setting: Before canon. You need to know all Captains and Vice-Captains, and having finished the Soul Society arc will help you catch all the nuances.
s2m's comments: 31 short, glorious insights into the characters of the Shinigami, given to us with plenty of laughs and a little thoughtfulness on the side. A fun read! My fave is definitely #8. *giggle*

Wasurenai by Empatheia
genre/rating: Comedy, G
author's summary: Yachiru x Byakuya. He always says no, but sometimes his no means maybe and sometimes it means yes.
length: one-shot at 1,645 words
setting: timeless, you just need to know who Byakuya, Yachiru, and Kenpachi are
s2m's comments: This author makes me genuinely like Yachiru, when in canon I'm rather indifferent to her character. Byakuya is much too stoic for his own good, and I like seeing him...tilted. :D

.oOo.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Cuddly Predators by EntreNous
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, PG-13
author's summary: Xander gets a kitten, and suddenly Spike seems to have a lot more interest in him.
length: complete at 14 chapters, 24,323 words
setting: season 5, I think
s2m's comments: Pack a toothbrush and some insulin, because the fluff is strong in this one. Adorbably cute, with several fun turn of phrases and one killer napping kitten scene. :3 D'awwww!

The Giles Thing by drsquidlove
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: Xander meets the teenaged Ripper, and his relationship with Rupert Giles will never be the same again. This is kind of an ode to that look Xander gets in his eye when his life is imploding.
length: complete at 8 chapters, 126,705 words
setting: starts halfway through season 4
s2m's comments: I first encountered hints of Giles/Xander in one of my other Buffy fic recs, and I rather liked the idea. I was very pleased to happen across this fic, which does my vague impressions of "that would be kind of awesome..." justice. X3 Xander's slow maturity is shown well, and Giles is revealed to be an amazing, complex man. The author made an unfortunate choice of page design, so if you have an LJ account, I suggest you use the "view in my style" option. The fic is completely worth the effort!

The Lamest Spell by Nomelon
genre/rating: Comedy, NC-17, graphic sex and dub-con
author's summary: The lamest spell in the history of Sunnydale is cast on Spike. Xander gets caught in the crossfire.
length: one-shot at 9,649 words
setting: vaguely season 4
s2m's comments: An amusing and toe-curling one-shot. How gloriously in-character for Spike! Haha! ^^ I now have a small Spike/Xander collection, much to my enjoyment! XD

Post Grad by Te
genre/rating: Drama, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: Life tends to change after high school.
length: complete at 3 chapters, 3 vignettes, and 56,047 words
setting: after the "Enemies" ep, so not too long before the Scoobies graduate from High School
s2m's comments: If you're looking for something fun and happy, don't read this fic. If you want something gut-wrenchingly good and painful and awesome, then here you go. The writing style is almost stream of consciousness, so it takes some getting used to, but is extremely good once you figure it out. Whoa. (Spike/Xander, BTW)

Take Your Time by Carrie
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13 or NC-17 for graphic sex, depending on which version of a specific chapter you choose to read
author's summary, shortened by s2m: This is a challenge fic where Willow goes back in time and meets Angelus before he was vamped. Please keep in mind that this was started right after the episode 'Becoming', so Angel is Spike's sire, not Drusilla, and he was sired before Drusilla, not after.
length: complete at 40 chapters, 302,752 words
setting: after the end of the 2nd season, when Angel is (highlight for spoilers)sacrificed to stop the world from ending
s2m's comments: My first impression was, "An amusing read, but not good enough for my recs list." Then this fic turned into a gripping epic when I wasn't looking. I can't pinpoint the exact moment, but suddenly I found myself obsessed and unable to stop reading. O.o Be patient with the thin beginning and that irritating wallpaper, because I think the overall fic is worth it. ^^

It's About Time by Carrie
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: This is the sequel to my little saga 'Take Your Time'. If you haven't read it, don't read this story. You won't understand it and will be missing most of the fun.
length: abandoned WIP at 23 chapters, 220,491 words
setting: immediately after Take Your Time ends
s2m's comments: Like its prequel, this fic is kind of thin but juuuust good enough to keep me reading. It's frustratingly abandoned and the last chapter up left a bitter aftertaste, but oh well! I had to be honest with myself and add it here. :P

crossovers

In alphabetical order by fic title. To find crossovers by fandom, see the fandom's specific section on this page.

Geniuses by Amaretto
fandoms: Calvin and Hobbes and Foxtrot
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, T
author's summary: Slash. Crossover with Foxtrot. Jason and Calvin meet in college and find in each other something they never found elsewhere
length: one-shot at 10,831 words
setting: the guys are in college
s2m's comments: This sweet fic makes me want to hug both Calvin and Jason. XD Very cute and fun, and how I wish we had a sequel!! *wistful sigh* The Storm Trooper steals the show. *wink*

Iron Robin by athenemiranda
genre/rating: Drama, R
author's summary: The original prompt was, 'Howard Stark pimped out his son like a rent boy to close business deals.' But unfortunately for Howard Stark, he was trying to close a deal with Wayne Enterprises. Warnings for whorefic, teen!Tony/adult!Bruce, implied abusive!Howard, implied alcoholic!Tony. Kissing and partial nudity, no real smut.
length: one-shot at 1,833 words
setting: Nolan-verse Batman
s2m's comments: This is a powerful one. I rather like that it is a one-shot, as it lets the reader imagine all the possibilities for a sequel. Sometimes open endings are good, and this is one of them. ^^

Nevermore by lucidscreamer
fandoms: Crow: Stairway to Heaven and Real Ghostbusters
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: When one of the Ghostbusters dies, the Crow brings him back. "We're in the land of the dead, Peter," Charlie said, his gravelly voice surprisingly gentle. "We're dead." Warning: character death Peter Venkman, angst
length: stalled WIP at 18 chapters, 48,951 words
setting: Real Ghostbusters several years into the series
s2m's comments: Beautifully flowing writing is a wonderful bonus on this intriguing fic. The first few chapters are heavy on the angst, but don't let that drive you away! I hope the author updates soon, because I really want to know what happens. :D

Ouran Academy Guest Lecturers Series by peroxidepest17
fandoms: Ouran High School Host Club with visitors from Fruits Basket, Gravitation, Love Mode, Skip Beat!, and Yami no Matsuei
genre/rating: Comedy, PG
author's summary: Famous Guest lecturers from all over Japan and beyond come to speak to the esteemed staff and student body of Ouran High School
length: stalled WIP at 5 chapters, 22,586 words
setting: Another timeless fic! You just need to know the cast basics of Ouran. A quick wiki visit for any unfamiliar visiting characters should be enough help, if needed.
s2m's comments: This fic is a fun comedy that subtly explores the relationships between the main Ouran cast as seen through the eyes of different guest lecturers. Each guest's unique personality gives us a fascinating look at the Host Club, and even provides us some great laughs! The Skip Beat chapter was my personal fave. ^^

Ouran High Ghost Club by Finite Sledgehammer
fandoms: Bleach and Ouran High School Host Club
genre/rating: Comedy, Action, PG-13
author's summary: It's Bleach, it's Ouran, it's wacky! When Ouran High is infested with ghosts, who you gonna call? Ghost Bu I mean, your friendly neighborhood shinigami of course!
length: complete at 10 chapters, 27,681 words
setting: Bleach after Soul Society with a touch of the Arrancar arc, Ouran...it doesn't really matter with Ouran, does it?
s2m's comments: A delightfully fun fic! It does have some grammar issues (mostly apostrophes), but they don't distract from the crossover glee. Renge in Shinigami cosplay! Kon playing up the bad boy element! Rukia in the frilly Ouran uniform! Nekozawa being Nekozawa! And spazztastic Tamaki!! Waiiii!

Running Blind by Dejah Thoris of Mars
fandoms: CSI: Vegas and Danny Phantom
genre/rating: Drama, Action, PG
author's summary: Something supernatural is killing people in Las Vegas...and it all seems to lead back to a fifteen-year-old runaway named Danny Fenton.
length: long one-shot at 22,651 words
setting: CSI when Grissom has the beard (so around the 4th season), and DP not too long after he met Clockwork.
s2m's comments: It sounds like a crack crossover, but this one WORKS. Very well. It's funny, it's IC, it's written well, it makes you want to hug Danny, and it's worth reading for Grissom vs Vlad alone. I've read it four times now, and I still enjoy and admire it.

Shadows in Starlight by Vathara
fandoms: Rurouni Kenshin and Star Wars
genre/rating: Drama, Action, PG-13
author's summary: What if Obi-Wan found more than the tractor beam's location in the Death Star files? AU, fusion with Rurouni Kenshin.
length: complete at 14 chapters, 136,199 words
setting: Rather than toss one cast into the other's world, this story takes both worlds and blends them to create a unique third where Obi-wan isn't killed on the Death Star and samurai wield light sabers.
s2m's comments: This fic is loosely patterned on the first few Kenshin story arcs, with a dose of originality required to work in the author's (and my...) favorite red-headed Jedi. :3 If your immediate impression is that this crossover could never work, remember that samurai films were one of Lucas' influences when he was creating Star Wars, and I think you'll begin to understand. *wink* One of the best crossovers I've read, expertly rendered with joy by a devoted fan of both series.

Stardust by kikkimax
fandoms: NCIS and Stargate
genre/rating: Adventure, PG-13
author's summary: A man with no memory holds the key to three bizarre deaths.
length: one-shot in two parts at 46,040 words
setting: NCIS - when Kate is still part of the team; Stargate SG-1 - I honestly don't know, but apparently Daniel is human...again?
s2m's comments: This is a fun one, in no small part due to the NCIS team's fabulous interaction. I've only seen the original Stargate movie, but I was able to follow this fic with little trouble. I did poke around on Wiki for some SG-1 info, though. ^^ This fic does contain some slashy UST, and it's rather adorkable UST, at that. X3

Starting from Scratch by babies-stole-my-dingo
fandoms: Angel and Firefly
genre/rating: Drama, PG
author's summary: Spike and Illyria find themselves at loose ends in the FireflyVerse, and River finds out something she didn't know about herself.
length: one-shot at 5,667 words
setting: Angel right as tv series ends, Firefly after Ariel episode
s2m's comments: This fic is so perfectly in character it's almost frightening. I really like what the author did with Spike's relationship with Illyria and River. River is especially intriguing in this fic.

untitled Matsuda and Ryu part 1 part 2 part 3 by Stariceling
fandoms: Death Note and Tantei Gakuen Q
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: no official one yet, so here's my version: Ryu's quiet intensity reminds Matsuda of both L and Light, and Matsuda decides someone needs to talk to the boy about whatever it is he's holding back. Ryu/Matsuda, sort of.
length: one-shot spread into 3 links due to LJ's quirks, 1,536 words
setting: both after the end of Death Note and after Ryu joins the regular TGQ cast
s2m's comments: As powerful as one-shots can be, I keep hoping the author will spin this into a series! Good stuff. ^^

Upon a Fiery Steed by Vathara
fandoms: Gundam Wing and Stargate: SGI
genre/rating: Adventure, Drama, R
author's summary: Daniel. Duo. Two trouble magnets, one very unlucky System Lord... Gundam Wing AU crossover, finally finished!
length: complete at 15 chapters, 87,503 words
setting: Stargate SG-1: AU splits off from canon just before the 4th season episode "Chain Reaction"; Gundam Wing: almost complete AU, though having watched the entire series and OAVs is a good idea
s2m's comments: This one is 85% Stargate SG-1, 15% massively AU Gundam Wing. Like Vathara's other crossover fic I've recced, this one is heavy on the plot and politics. My Stargate SG-1 knowledge is limited to Wiki entries--most of the related nuances flew by me--yet I still enjoyed the fic! I particularly like what Vathara did with Duo and Daniel. And it's not what you think, as much as my naughty side wishes it was. :3

When Summoning, Please Watch the Wording by Ryuuza Kochou
fandoms: Good Omens and Supernatural
genre/rating: Comedy, PG
author's summary: Dean and Sam fall into the hands of Satanists, who, naturally, want to use Sam as the vessel for the Golden Eyed Demon. Well...they do get A Certain Golden Eyed Demon. And an avenging Angel. And a serious posterior whooping. Good Omens Crossover
length: one-shot at 5,209 words
setting: Good Omens several years after the book, Supernatural later on in the 2nd season
s2m's comments: The author did a solid job of merging the GO and SPN worlds for this. The characterizations are spot-on, complete with snappy dialogue and the duality of human nature. Heh!

CSI: Vegas

The Drop of a Name by Bicoastal
genre/rating: Comedy, PG
author's summary: On a dark night, a game in the break room gets a little wild!
length: one-shot at 1,862 words
setting: a year after Hodges joins the team
s2m's comments: I laughed so much, I HAD to add this one to my page. XD

Game Day by iamtheenemy
genre/rating: Romance, Comedy, R
author's summary: No official one, so allow me: Greg decides the best way to spend time outside of work with Nick is to develop an interest in watching that most reviled of professional sports: football.
length: one-shot at 6,446 words
setting: 4th or 5th season, I think. Greg's in the field, Warrick's married.
s2m's comments: Greg is my favorite character in CSI, and this fic showcases why! He's so incredibly adorkable. X3 And devoted! I don't know how long I'd last at faking an interest in football. Eeesh.

Running Blind by Dejah Thoris of Mars
read its full listing in the crossover section

Sweet and Sour by vicxntric
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17
author's summary: Hodges/Nick; David Hodges knew the old Nick Stokes was in there somewhere. In the meantime, he could make do with what he had. Then things start going right, and that's when the real trouble begins.
length: one-shot in two parts at 35,508 words
setting: some time after Nick's 5th season cliffhanger ordeal is over
s2m's comments: The aspect I enjoyed the most about this fic was the amazing characterization of Hodges. His irritating attitude makes complete sense as the author spins it! This fic is also a welcome break from the standard UST slash formula.

.oOo.

Danny Phantom

Outside Looking In by Ellen Brand
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: Casper High's new psychiatrist has some interesting interviews ahead of him.
length: complete at 15 chapters, 16,815 words
setting: begins after ep 9, "My Brother's Keeper", then later references eps 24 and 25, "Reign Storm", and another fic by this author, Danny Shadow
s2m's comments: It's fascinating watching an outsider trying to make sense of what's going on with Danny and company. The OC is top-notch. Also sneaky Sailormoon reference is sneaky. :3

Running Blind by Dejah Thoris of Mars

A Thermos for Valerie by Bluemoonalto
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: Danny arranges a meeting with Valerie, to clear the air and end their feud. But is she ready to listen? One way or the other, she’s leaving with a Thermos.
length: complete at 12 chapters, 17,062 words
setting: after the Evil Danny from the future movie, before he and Sam officially are together
s2m's comments: Ooooh....will she or won't she is the big question here. I suggest you stop reading at the end of chapter 11 for a killer what-if ending. Eeeee! *shivers*

.oOo.

Death Note

Coexistence is Boredom by Sakurazukamori6
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex, graphic violence
author's summary: A new death note. A new plan for world sanctity. And an entirely misled Catholic clergy. Raito and L take their respective places on the sides of their own justice. A final battle waged in the Garden of Eden. LRaitoL. For a Brief Moment.
length: stalled WIP at 33 chapters, 231,998 words
setting: after Light regains his memory
s2m's comments: Keeping L and Light in-character while expanding their relationship beyond rivalry is something very very few authors manage to achieve, but Sakurazukamori6 has done it masterfully. The plot is never predictable and the two men are so completely their manipulative, lying, bastard selves that it's downright glorious to see them together. Sex does not always equal love, indeed.

Endings by Edmondia Dantes
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: After it's all over, there's still eternity to deal with.
length: one-shot at 2,311 words
setting: after the end of the series
s2m's comments: This one-shot is written in an elegant and lyrical style. I admire how the author has portrayed Light's observations of his version of the afterlife, and his reunion with a certain someone is painfully beautiful.

Lesson Learned by Nanashi-o
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: Just a small moment of Near with his idol-of-sorts.
length: one-shot at 315 words
setting: when Near is about 7 or 8 years old
s2m's comments: It's good to read a fic that reminds us how cut-throat a certain someone can be. Don't let the short length drive you away, the brevity makes it all the more powerful.

Rewrite by Kat-chan
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, PG-13
author's summary: L x Misa. A moment in time. A chance meeting. Fate turned upside down.
length: stalled WIP at 28 chapters, 85,755 words
setting: AU before the series begins
s2m's comments: I never though L/Misa could ever work in a fic, yet Kat-chan makes them sit up and beg for more cake. Everyone is perfectly IC--especially Misa. I didn't like Misa in canon at all, but the author has really made the girl live up to her potential while still being silly Misa-Misa. Verrrry nice.

Dresden Files, The

Near Miss by binz and shiplizard
genre/rating: Adventure, Romance, R
author's summary, shortened: Harry Dresden is about to find out that the real power behind Chicago's throne is a lot worse then a spoiled mobster's son -- and maybe more than he can handle. John Marcone is a mechanic with a bad limp and a bad history with Vargassi. But in Harry Dresden he sees enough raw power to save the city he loves. Can Harry and his car survive what Chicago has in store for him, even with a full-time mechanic?
length: one-shot at 42,064 words
setting: AU of the first three Dresden novels
s2m's comments: A fun AU! I love picturing the confident and elegant Marcone as a grease monkey. You don't have to have read all 3 books to enjoy the fic, but it does help make sense of things. I understand this is one of the most famous Dresden slash stories out there. I think it deserves the fame. ^^

Double Dork by Kat of Mosh Pits
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: Edd ends up tutoring Kevin during the summer. Eddy isn’t happy that Kevin is taking up all of Double D’s time. Edd doesn’t know what to do. Stupid PostIts.
length: stalled WIP at 6 chapters, 29,545 words
setting: Summer before the guys are 8th graders.
s2m's comments: I read this fic on a friend's rec while knowing nothing about the show and really enjoyed it!! It drove me to watch a handful of eps so I had a better idea of who everyone in the fic is. Heh!
.oOo.

Fast and the Furious, The

Rewind by Khaleesian
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, Hurt/Comfort, NC-17, sort of graphic sex
author's summary: I can't find one, so here's my version: Dom is forced to rely on Brian after he's severely injured in the film's last wreck. He tries to clean up the mess he's made of his and his friends lives, never wondering why Brian insists on coming along and proves himself invaluable in helping Dom straighten things out.
length: one-shot at 54,398 words
setting: AU at the end of the first film
s2m's comments: This fic has given me new appreciation for Manly Movies. ^^ The author's almost exclusive use of Dom's POV is done well, and it is interesting to read a story told by someone with such a violent personality so different from mine! I was particularly impressed with how the author hinted at Brian's hidden attraction to Dom, and the latter's slow realization of Brian's emotions. Very nice. The fic does lose its focus about two thirds of the way through, and the ending kind of dribbles in. It's clear the author wasn't sure where to take the story next, but I still enjoyed it.

author's summary: You live your life a certain way. You do the same things every day. Without knowing it, one man is about to change that.
length: one-shot at 3,242 words
setting: after the 7th game ends, I think.
s2m's comments: This fic really impressed me. I don't care for reader inserts and know nothing about FF, but this fic earned a slot on my favorites page! It's all about the ending, which meant a great deal to me. ^^ All the emo and angst is worth it.

length: one-shot at 2,064 words
setting: mid-series
s2m's comments: This fic gives us a glimpse of reality as seen through Mamirin's eyes. Her odd, existentialist personality in canon has always made me curious to learn more about her. The word flow and amazing imagery in this fic grant that desire very well. A beautiful read!

length: one-shot at 8,271 words
setting: reincarnation after the series ends
s2m's comments: As much as I love FY--it was the first anime I was ever truly passionate about--I've always felt a large portion of the cast met a needlessly harsh end. This fic gives two of my favorite characters a second chance, and is poignant and well-written as a lovely omake. *wink*

Arrangement, The by maldoror_gw
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, (twisted) Romance, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: Wufei, struggling with his demons, agrees to a wartime fling with Heero, no affection needed or wanted. But the 'arrangement' lasts and grows as they join the Preventers. It could become a source of strength for both...if they let it.
length: 39 chapters, two epilogues, and an intermission, 310,765 words
setting: AU of the final third of the tv series and beyond, ignoring Endless Waltz
s2m's comments: An IC relationship between two powerful alpha males like Wufei and Heero could never be soft and sweet. Appropriately, this fic will rip out your heart and gleefully stomp all over it. I'm left amazed at Maldoror's ability to write, yet again. Her version of Heero is a bit extreme, but still fits with canon. This one has a suprirising number of typos in the first half, but they do clear up. Don't miss the Intermission, the archivist didn't link it from the end of the fic, so click on the "back to Maldoror's fic" link at the bottom of the last chapter to access it.

Beautiful Symmetries by maldoror_gw
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, PG-13
author's summary: After the war, Wufei is glad to be alone. But two other pilots come back into his life, and that's when the trouble starts for the solitary dragon.
length: complete at a prologue and 6 chapters, 42,020 words
setting: after Endless Waltz
s2m's comments: The only thing better than a fic starring two of my fave pilots is one starring all 3. Eeeeheeheehee!! <3 <3 <3 Maldoror-sensei, I salute your writing genius!!! Two lines in particular really made an impact upon me. *happy sigh* Quatre's cameo is full of win. :D

Blood or Chocolate? by KKChitown
genre/rating: Comedy, Suspense, R
author's summary, shortened by s2m: Duo Maxwell is an almost average guy in a small town. He works at the only gas station for miles around, is gorgeous, but single. But what makes him different is that he's a clairvoyant. So when he runs across a man whose thoughts he can't hear, although trying to gives him nosebleeds, he decides that that is a fair trade. That is until he finds out that the guy isn't a typical 'guy,' and that getting involved with him only leads to trouble...and a few dead bodies.
length: complete at 22 chapters, 70,947 words
setting: AU, early 00s in central Texas
s2m's comments: Here's a fun one! It isn't often you find a murder mystery disguised as a comedy. ^^ The fic does contain some romance, but it happens fast and isn't the true focus of the story--which is the murder mystery. The sudden romance does fit with the author's rendering of Duo and Wufei, though, so in this case, it works. I enjoyed the fic muchly, and while it does have some plot holes, the story and writing render them (somewhat) easily overlooked. Heeee!

Freeport by maldoror_gw
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, R
author's summary: Freeport colony: a notorious den of pirates, smugglers and thieves. Wufei persuades one of its denizens, his one-time ally Duo, to help him catch a killer hiding there. Agent Chang thinks he knows what to expect from this case, from Freeport and from Duo Maxwell. He couldn't be more wrong.
length: complete at 35 chapters, 324,404 words
setting: 5 years after the end of the tv series, sort-of Endless Waltz compliant
s2m's comments: Maldoror comes through once again with an amazingly crafted and intricate story, this time featuring my two favorite pilots. :3 The amount of thought invested into the colony's creation is outstanding, and it's almost a third main character. I am impressed! But then, this IS a Maldoror fic, so yeah. ^^V

Trial and Error by maldoror_gw
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, PG-13
author's summary: Heero Yuy's mission planner: Date: AC199. Mission objective: Finding compatible mates for Gundam Pilots 2, 3, 4 and 5. Timeframe: Undefined. Difficulty: Moderate, despite lack of personal information on the subject of romantic affection. How hard can it be to get people to fall in love?
length: complete at 15 chapters, 36,938 words
setting: after Endless Waltz
s2m's comments: I'm glad I chose to read this, since I needed to laugh and this fic delivers! XD Heero's oblivious POV completely makes the fic!

Accountable by Dyce
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, T, dub-con
author's summary: The war is over. Hermione Granger's life, while safer, is no less complicated. Victory has had unintended consequences which affect not only Hermione, but all those around her.
length: complete at 31 chapters, 150,731 words
setting: Hermoine's final year at Hogwarts, AU from canon after book 6
s2m's comments: I have no interest in baby!fic, but this one was definitely worth reading. Obviously, since I've linked it here! The author has managed to take a fanfic trope and spin it into a heart-wrenching story that does not glorify pregnancy or taking care of an infant. I must also salute her for writing a Harry/Ginny ship I genuinely liked! This fic kept me reading for 24 hours, as I just had to know what was going to happen next.

Best Revenge, The by Arsinoe de Blassenville
genre/rating: Drama, PG
author's summary: AU. Yes, the old Snape retrieves Harry from the Dursleys formula. I just had to write one. Everything changes, because the best revenge is living well. T for Mentor Snape's occasional naughty language. Supportive Minerva
length: complete at 47 chapters, 222,259 words
setting: AU from Harry's 11th birthday
s2m's comments: I've read and recced quite a few mentor!Snape fics, but this one stands out for taking things a bit differently than the norm and my own expectations. I like this author's Harry, too. ^^ Definitely well-written and an enjoyable read!

Best Revenge, The: Time of the Basilisk by Arsinoe de Blassenville
genre/rating: Adventure, PG
author's summary: AU: The continuation of Book I. [highlight to read:]Not all of Tom Riddle is gone. A mysterious journal and a new Defense teacher pose challenges for Harry and his guardian. T for Mentor Snape's occasional naughty language. Supportive Minerva
length: complete at 30 chapters, 114,287words
setting: the 2nd half of Harry's first year at Hogwarts
s2m's comments: A glorious sequel, just as good as its predecessor! I am still impressed that Arsinoe de Blassenville was able to take the well-done premise of mentor!Snape and the retelling of the first two books and gives us something delightfully different!

Better Be Slytherin! by jharad17
genre/rating: Angst, Drama, T
author's summary: As a first year, Harry is sorted into Slytherin instead of Gryffindor, and no one is more surprised than his new Head of House. Snape mentors Harry fic.
length: complete at 51 chapters, 174,735 words
setting: AU at book 1, but remains true to most of canon established before that
s2m's comments: My favorite Harry-in-Slytherin! Poor Harry deserves all the protection and guidance he can get, and this fic delivers. Snape's eventual understanding of Harry is handled well and with grace.

Building with Worn Out Tools by Lomonaaeren
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R
author's summary: HPDM slash. Post War, Post Hogwarts, HBP spoilers. Right smack in the middle of a stormy divorce from Ginny, Harry has no reason to be attracted to his Arguer, Draco Malfoy. I mean, it's Malfoy. COMPLETE
length: complete at 33 chapters, 126,254 words
setting: after book 6, set several years after the author's version of Voldie's defeat
s2m's comments: It's kind of nice to read Harry/Draco when they're both adults. Lomonaaeren has taken some unusual ideas with this fic! Careful if you're a Ginny fan, there's some serious character bashing in this one.

Cambiare Podentes: Invocare by Jordan Grant
genre/rating: Drama, Angst, NC-17, graphic sex, rape unfortunately, possible abuse triggers
author's summary: A new prophecy comes to light, one that promises death for Harry Potter and enslavement for the wizarding world, unless Harry himself consents to being enslaved--irrevocably and for life--to Severus Snape.
length: complete at 51 chapters, 302,717 words
setting: after book 5
s2m's comments: This fic is disturbing. It's the darkest one I have recced on this page, and I mean it. It is also very well-written, gripping, handles an overused trope extremely well, and put my heart through the wringer. As good as it is, everyone, do NOT embark upon this one lightly. I knew going in it was dark, and the warnings were not exaggerated. *shivers* D=

Draco: Phoenix Rising by Cheryl Dyson
genre/rating: Adventure, Romance, R
author's summary: This is my version of Book Seven, and it begins shortly after The Half Blood Prince, so ignore Deathly Hallows. I've tried to remain true to the characters and canon, but I've added one element JKR seems to leave out: ROMANCE!
length: complete at 52 chapters, 151,729 words
setting: after book 6
s2m's comments: The first word that springs to mind about this fic is "charming". It's a fun read, has an engaging story, and some unique twists I've never come across before in HP fic. It's also a lighter Draco/Hermione fic than the others I have recced.

Eclipse by PhoenixSong
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R
author's summary, shortened: The old rivalry turns deadly when Draco abducts Harry for Voldemort. It's the perfect plan, guaranteeing revenge, power, and prestige, all in one blow. But when Draco's world turns upside down, the fight to save himself and Harry begins, and the battle will take them both through hell and back. If they come back. Harry/Draco slash, Post-OotP.
length: complete at 18 chapters, 282,251 words
setting: early in their 6th year, written after book 5
s2m's comments: I am left in awe at PhoenixSong's skills. It takes an amazing author to keep endless pages of dialogue from turning boring or repetetive, but she pulls it off amazingly! Harry and Draco learn much about each other in those long conversations, and they are intersperced with just the right amount of comedy and action. Definitely a must-read for every Harry/Draco fan!

Faith by Dragongirl16
genre/rating: Drama, Angst, R
author's summary: What if the wizarding world turned its back on Harry? Who will stay true? Who can he turn to? What will he do? A HD romance in the works!
length: complete at 48 chapters, 338,340 words
setting: after book 4
s2m's comments: This fic has an awesome beginning! The story drags in the middle and I had to force myself to finish it, but the beginning is definitely worth a read. Stick it out through Christmas. ^^ Unfortunately the author loves to refer to characters with euphemisms rather than names, so you'll see a large amount of "the dark-haired boy", "the green-eyed youth", "the animagus, "the werewolf", "the ethereal platinum blond with eyelashes like spun sugar" (okay, I made that one up) but you get the idea. The beginning is where the good stuff is at!!

Fallout by Sage
genre/rating: Drama, Angst, NC-17, graphic sex and graphic violence
author's summary: Hermione learns about growing up through the redemption of Draco Malfoy.
length: WIP at 37 chapters, 235,911 words
setting: after book 5, stretching four years into the future
s2m's comments: I am speechless to do this fic justice. I fear this one will ruin me for every other Draco/Hermione story out there... O= This fic is very dark and can be disturbing. You have to join the site to read, but it's free and definitely worth it.

NEW!!!1! Fate is a Four-Letter Word by Philo
genre/rating: Drama, Suspense, NC-17, BDSM, graphic sex, and graphic violence
author's summary: Harry's only aim has been to create a safe and happy life for his family, but his efforts are destroyed one spring afternoon. Harry meets new friends and old enemies, old friends and new enemies, whilst trying to find a path through a changing world.
length: complete at 105 chapters, 550,310 words
setting: about 20 years after book 7, mostly epilogue compliant
s2m's comments: This story has the most involved and suspenseful murder mystery I've ever found in fanfic! Harry's romantic entanglements are almsot a side-story to the focus of learning who exactly was behind the murder. A complicated and well-planned fic that was a joy to read. My only quibble is that the sex scenes can seem almost shoehorned into the story. For once, I kind of wish the author just faded to black. Never mind the sex though, read for the mystery! And the unconvetional romance. *wink*

Freedom and not Peace by Lightning on the Wave

Giving Extras by whitehound
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: Post DH fic. He was sure he was going to die. He was sure he had died. Only somebody seemed to have decided to give him a new lease of life he hadn't asked for. Follows on from Flower Remedy and examines Snape's memories in detail.
length: stalled WIP at 8 chapters, 50,523 words
setting: 20 years after book 7 ends, epilogue compliant
s2m's comments: The author starts with an unusual and humorous premise and spins it into an amazing character study of Snape and his choices in life. This fic is very much a character drama, and it provides some intriguing angles on the motivations of Dumbledore and Snape himself. This is a serious and dramatic fic with just the right touch of humor to balance things out. Yes, it is a spin-off of a drabble by the same author, but she kindly includes the drabble for us in chapter 1. ^^

Happy Father's Day, Harry Potter! by cragarrows
genre/rating: Humor, PG-13
author's summary: Harry learns that he is the last surviving Heir of Gryffindor, and that Prophecy says an Heir of Gryffindor will destroy Voldemort. This is why Voldemort wants Harry dead. Harry has a cunning plan to exploit Voldemort's faith in the Prophecy -- or did Dumbledore think of it first?
length: one-shot at 5,492 words
setting: between book 4 and book 5
s2m's comments: Delightfully twisted. So much so that apparently some people can't even finish it. *evil laughter*

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by Less Wrong
genre/rating: Drama, Comedy, T
author's summary: Petunia married a professor, and Harry grew up reading science and science fiction. Then came the Hogwarts letter, introducing strange new opportunities to exploit. And new friends, like Hermione, and Professor McGonagall, and Professor Quirrell.
length: WIP at 77 chapters, 447,882 words
setting: AU from very beginning
s2m's comments: Put on your thinking caps and keep a dictionary handy, because this fic features a Harry who THINKS and has plans for World Optimization. Irreverent, hilarious, and delightfully chilling at times. What a gem! XD

Harry's First Detention by kbinnz
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: AU one-shot about Harry’s first detention with Snape. Take one mistreated boy, one misinformed man, mix well and watch what happens.
length: one-shot at 8,079 words

s2m's comments: This fic sets an amazing stage for the epic that follows, which you'll find right below! X3

Harry's New Home by kbinnz
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: One lonely little boy. One snarky, grumpy git. When the safety of one was entrusted to the other, everyone knew this was not going to turn out well... Or was it? Sequel to "Harry's First Detention". AU.
length: complete at 64 chapters, 335,155 words
setting: AU a week or two into Harry's first year at Hogwarts
s2m's comments: My favorite of the abused!Harry fics, as disturbing as that sounds. Kbinnz has done a great job dealing with Snape and showing how Harry comes to think of him. *thumbs up* Nice job!

Heart Over Mind by Regann
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, PG-13
author's summary: Something odd about Hermione causes her to have unexpected reaction to a love potion. Only it's one which no one expected. How could a lack of reaction cause so much trouble? AU to Books 5 and 6.
length: complete at 27 chapters, 108,003 words
setting: after book 4
s2m's comments: I never thought I'd like a story with this particular pairing, but the fic came highly recced, so I gave it a try and was sucked in. Very well-written with excellent character development that makes an improbable romance believable. It's nice to read a fic that challenges my vocabulary, too. ^^ And no, I'm not telling you the pairing, that's the surprise. :P

Home Fries Nazi, The by pir8fancier
genre/rating: Drama, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: In the aftermath of Harry's defeat of Voldemort, all Death Eaters lose their magic. Snape decamps to the United States, where he works as a short order cook in a diner. Harry seeks him out to ask for advice.
length: one-shot at 27,808 words
setting: AU after book 6, several years after the non-canon defeat of Voldemort
s2m's comments: The moment I saw this fic described as "Snape is a fry cook in Arizona", I had to read it for the sheer crack potential. I was pleasantly surprised to find a thoughtful, deep, and angst-filled Snarry fic that makes me want to hug them both. Even if you don't care for Snape/Harry, I highly recommend this one.

In Plain Sight by melissophobia
genre/rating: Drama, Angst, PG-13
author's summary: When Dumbledore finds an abused Harry, he decides Harry needs to go into hiding. Under the guise of a Student exchange program, Harry's id is changed and he is resorted into Slytherin.
length: complete at 23 chapters, 1 author's note, and an epilogue, 84,216 words
setting: AU after book 5
s2m's comments: An unusual method to get Harry in Slytherin. I like it! The author has some grammar and spelling issues, but the story is gripping. Definitely worth reading!

Kiss a Boy in London Town (And Other Intimate Misadventures of a Society Whore) by Femme
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: There's only one cardinal sin for a whore. (Harry/Draco)
length: one-shot at 36,437 words
setting: about 12 years afer the defeat of Voldie, somewhat epilogue compliant
s2m's comments: An engaging fic written in canon-character first person, I think this is an enjoyable read. I normally don't care much for holiday fic, but here it works to advance the plot, and I didn't mind at all! I am amused at high sex scene/word count ratio, but given Draco's employment, it makes sense, and none of the scenes seemed forced or out of place for the story.

The Last Gift by Keina Snape
genre/rating: Drama, R, graphic violence in a couple chapters
author's summary: Harry receives a very special gift on his 16th birthday that leads him to the help he needs...Snape is finding respite from his growing pressures and discovers one in need of help. Despite himself, he finds he CAN grow close to another living being. Only..."everything would've been so much simpler if it'd actually been a cat"...
length: stalled WIP at 51 chapters, 449,147 words
setting: AU after book 5
s2m's comments: D'awww...Harry as Snape's kitty! :3 The first few chapters are rough, but they smooth out by chapter 10 or so! A fun idea with some interesting plot twists. This is the official English translation, as the fic is actually written in French, and is here. The translation is rather rough for the first few chapters, but it does smooth out.

Mirror of Maybe by Midnight Blue
genre/rating: Drama, R
author's summary: This fan-fiction involves the slash pairing of Harry Potter and Severus Snape
length: abandoned WIP at 21 chapters, quite a few words
setting: after book 4
s2m's comments: The official summary says nothing, so allow me. Harry is forever changed by his encounter with the Mirror of Maybe. With the information and experiences gleaned from the mirror, he's determined to defeat Voldemort and protect the people he loves. This story is incomplete and hasn't been updated in three years, but it's worth a read! Also consider this fic proof that a canon character as a Gary/Mary Sue can definitely work in the hands of a good writer. ^^V

Resonance by GreenGecko
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, PG-13
author's summary: Year six and Harry needs rescuing by Dumbledore and Snape. The resulting understanding between Harry and Snape is critical to destroying Voldemort and leads to an offer of adoption. Covers year seven and Auror training. Sequel is Revolution.
length: complete at 79 chapters, 501,491 words
setting: As told by the summary, AU starting with Harry's sixth year
s2m's comments: This fic is a classic in HP fandom, and I believe it is well-deserved. It's one of (if not THE) first Snape-adopts-Harry stories, and has been the inspiration for many authors. This fic isn't just focused on the central plot, but takes the time to explore the various aspects and events of Harry's day-to-day life and the resulting fallout of his significant achievements. A very good read, I was never bored!

Revolution by GreenGecko
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, PG-13
author's summary: Sequel to Resonance. (Highlight to read)Harry continues his Auror training and begins a journey of mastering his unusual and growing powers. Harry, with the help of his adoptive father, is finally making his own way, but fate and prophecy are never completely absent.
length: complete at 41 chapters, 389,758 words
setting: picks up immediately after Resonance ends
s2m's comments: A sqeuel that lives up to its predecessor! It's amazing to see plot bits GreenGecko laid out early in Resonance come to their full potential here! One of the things I enjoy most about this series is Harry's growth in maturity and physical form. It's lovely to see him becoming a man! Even though he does still stumble, on occasoin. X3

Resolution by GreenGecko
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, R
author's summary: Sequel to Resonance and Revolution. (Highlight to read) Harry enters his second year as an Auror Apprentice. Snape's wedding looms, and Harry's odd new powers mature, creating mayhem, perilous temptations, and opportunities to gain real wisdom.
length: WIP at 77 chapters, 731,869 words
setting: immediately after Revolution
s2m's comments: This third installment of GreenGecko's Resonance series is so good that at one point, I actually forgot to breathe. Her evil characters are truly evil, not in that cool badass way, but in that psychotoc machiavellian something-is-WRONG-with-this-person way. I can't decide to be happy that it's a WIP (yay, more to read!!) or frustrated (nooo, I want to finish it NOW!!!) Either way, I am very glad GreenGecko still updates! This epicly epic fic series is magnificent. I im in awe. O=

Sacrifices Arc: Saving Connor by Lightning on the Wave

length: complete at 22 chapters, 79,220 words
setting: massive AU of book 1
s2m's comments: I gush about every fic I rec here, but this epic series truly deserves praise. Saving Connor is the beginning of the magnificent Sacrifices Arc, an epic that proves how powerful, gripping, and wonderful fully realized fanfic can be. Intricate plots, unusual characterizations, delightfully twisted canon, a Snape who isn't instantly good, and deviously laid groundwork that comes to fruit hundreds of thousands of words later! Ohhhh yeah! XD Note the author rated her story "M", but I see no reason why. Also the slash doesn't even qualify as "pre-slash" in my opinion, thus I have not warned for it. Those who do not care for slash can read this fic without seeing any.

Sacrifices Arc: No Mouth but Some Serpent's by Lightning on the Wave
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, PG-13,
author's summary: AU of CoS, Slytherin!Harry. Harry goes back to Hogwarts, determined to protect his brother Connor, the Boy Who Lived, and stay in the shadows. But last year two people learned the truth about Harry... and this year, two more will.
length: complete at 33 chapters, 165,229 words
setting: massive AU of book 2
s2m's comments: I find myself at a loss to describe this fic. It's...it's a prime example of what can be done by an author who is both skilled and very very brave. O.o

Sacrifices Arc: Comes Out of Darkness Morn by Lightning on the Wave
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, PG-13
author's summary: AU of PoA, Slytherin!Harry. Harry struggles to rebuild himself after the shattering events of his second year. He will finally learn the truths he needs to know...but they're hardly going to be pleasant ones.
length: complete at 51 chapters, 273,218 words
setting: massive AU of book 3
s2m's comments: This third installment has propelled the Sacrifices Arc into one of my fanfic top ten. Canon has nothing on this fic, and I am in awe at the author's depth of writing and continuously amazing use of canon. *is stunned*

Sacrifices Arc: Freedom and not Peace by Lightning on the Wave
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, NC-17, graphic violence
author's summary: AU of GoF, Slytherin!Harry. Training his brother, negotiating with former Death Eaters, juggling responsibility and duty...Harry's life is running away with him, as he struggles to balance.
length: complete at 86 chapters, 491,138 words
setting: massive AU of book 4
s2m's comments: Lightning's Harry truly shines in this fic, and it's good to see Draco finally make his point clear in no uncertain terms!

Secrets by Vorabiza
genre/rating: Adventure, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: Beginning with Draco's unexpected arrival at the Dursleys, Harry's summer after sixth year becomes filled with activity and many secrets. As his summer progresses, Harry generates several unexpected allies as he finds himself actively becoming the leader of the Light side. H/D post-HBP
length: complete at 62 chapters, 411,189 words
setting: AU early in the summer after book 6
s2m's comments: This fic is nicely balanced between Harry and Draco's romance and the defeat Voldemort. I did rather like Vorabiza's badass version of Harry, and particularly how she used the twins! A very fast-paced fic. Not my favorite Drarry, but definitely worth a read. ^^

Severus Snape and the Ghost-Written Romance by Cluegirl
genre/rating: Drama, NC-17
author's summary: THP/DM, HP/SS, Romance, Adventure, Angst, Comedy. A tribute to Cyrano De Bergerac
length: complete 5 chapters, 63,637 words
setting: AU after book 5, fic begins when Harry is 22 years old
s2m's comments: This fic made me truly ache for Snape. He has been my favorite HP character since I read book 1 so many years ago, and this story really emphasizes the reasons why I admire him so much. The author has a distinctive writing style that implies rather than states. To fully grasp events, you need to concentrate on every word and interpret it. A welcome change from the usual "this happens and this and then this and this" fic norm. ^^

Slave Child by Kristen Hudson
genre/rating: Drama, Angst, PG-13
author's summary: A duel with Draco leads to drastic and permanent consequences for both Harry and Severus.
length: WIP at 79 chapters, 275,156 words
setting: after book 5
s2m's comments: This fic packs a real punch! This one is part of my beloved Mentor!Snape collection. But definitely don't read if you're looking for something happy. O.o I stopped reading around chapter 35, as her emo!Harry and comforting!Snape were getting a bit too much for me. I still rec the fic, though!

Starts With a Spin by Maxine
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, Comedy, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: It started with the spin of a bottle, and now Harry and Draco have gotten themselves so far into their own game there's almost no way out again. Except to keep playing.
length: complete at 17 chapters, 129,968 words
setting: after book 5
s2m's comments: Hmmm...I've read a lot of Harry/Draco, and this fic was different from what I've learned to expect. It stars off with a bang, becomes a bit meh in the middle, then has a BOOOOM ending that is only slightly rushed. I admit, the ending is what cinched the fic's inclusion here. Nice. ^^ That, and the comedy. It's good to see some strong comedy!

The Symmetrical Transit by Sage
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: Draco believed the world was screwed up because a lack of balance. Everything in the world had its equal parts -- love, hate; right, left; sun, moon -- but no one ever grew up with these parts in the same proportion, which made them off. People were either forced to live discordant, or they were lucky enough to find that balance through someone else.
length: WIP at 6 chapters, 35,351 words
setting: after book 6
s2m's comments: Sage's first Draco/Hermione fic, like Fallout above, is gut-wrenchingly powerful. It does ring similar to the other fic, but only in the first couple chapters. This fic was written in 2007, and the author is posting it to Granger Enchanted after a new beta. The complete original fic IS available here on LiveJournal. To read it on LJ you need to join the community per its rules on the profile page. Yes, it takes some effort, but after being seduced by the 5 chapters at Granger Enchanted, I pursued the rest on LJ. The song and dance required is definitely worth it. GUH.

"Two" Much by SoftObsidian74
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex and BDSM
author's summary: Hermione finds herself in a relationship with two Malfoy men, can she handle it? LM/HG/DM
length: WIP at 17 chapters, ~95,000 words
setting: AU 5 years after book 7, sort of epilogue compliant but no kids for anyone
s2m's comments: You know how sometimes you're scanning the fic lists and a summary catches your eye, even though the subject matter isn't your usual cuppa?? That's how I found myself reading this one. ^^;;; Um...wow? *laughs* It does have a solid dramatic storyline beyond the relationship triangle. I was pleased to discover it isn't a PWP, and that I've included it on my recs page is testimony to my opinion! :D

A Year Like None Other by Aspeninthesunlight
genre/rating: Drama, R, graphic violence in two or three chapters
author's summary: It all started with a letter from home and family. Except, Harry doesn't really have either, does he? He's about to get them. A Snape-adopts-Harry story providing an alternate 6th year.
length: complete epic at 97 chapters, 762,567 words
setting: after book 5
s2m's comments: If all fanfic were this good, I'd never need to buy a normal book again. I can't express how amazing this fic is. I laughed, I cried, I squirmed, I hid under my desk, I hoped, and I profoundly thanked the random person who recced it to an LJ comm. *tears of joy*

A Summer Like None Other by Aspeninthesunlight
genre/rating: Drama, R
author's summary: Family isn't everything, as Harry, Snape, and Draco discover in this sequel to A Year Like None Other. How will a mysterious mirror and a surprising new relationship affect a father and his two sons?
length: complete epic at 24 chapters, 225,007 words
setting: after book 5
s2m's comments: A sequel worthy of the original!

A Family Like None Other by Aspeninthesunlight
genre/rating: Drama, R
author's summary: Third story in the "Like None Other" universe. During his final year at Hogwarts, relationships will splinter as Harry confronts secrets long-buried and faces the greatest challenge of them all.
length: WIP at 37 chapters, 358,988 words
setting: AU after book 5
s2m's comments: This pretty much sums up my opinion: XD Some of the groundwork laid in AYLNO comes to fruit here!

Yet Another Snape Meets the Dursleys Story by rabbit and -v-Jinx-v
genre/rating: Drama, Comedy, G
author's summary: When Snape is called to the Dursleys' by an urgent message, he does not find what he expects to find.
length: complete at 30 chapters, 71,811 words
setting: after book 4
s2m's comments: The title may be rather plain, but the story definitely is not! Very gripping, and only made more so since there's no dashing, perfect heroics in this fic. Things do not go as planned, no one saves the day, and poor Snape is just trying to fulfill his promise to Lily. Well-written and with an intriguing glimpse of Snape's past. (And who doesn't want to see the Dursleys get what they deserve?)

Hikaru no Go

Bloodstone by Nataku
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: If there are ghosts in the Hikaru no Go universe, might there not also be vampires?
length: one-shot at 21,259 words
setting: The boys are 17. Author says set after volume 19/ep 65+.
s2m's comments: I've managed to (mostly) avoid reading the cliche of vampire!fic, but even I can tell this fic handles things differently. It went in a direction I did not expect, and what I thought would be a light amusement turned into an enjoyable read! So yes, my very first HikaGo rec is for vampire!fic. What can I say? *sheepish grin*

Howl's Moving Castle

Woman True and Fair, A by The S
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, PG
author's summary: What might Howl's Moving Castle have been like if the 3rd person narration had been biased toward Howl's point of view instead of Sophie's? This is an exercise in what if.
length: abandoned WIP at 26 chapters, 115,329 words
setting: begins in chapter 4 of the book
s2m's comments: This fic gives us amazing insight into events as seen by Howl, including events off-screen from the book that we can only imagine from canon. ^^ The author's insider knowledge of Welsh gives new depth to Howl's POV, it's really fascinating! Be sure to read her notes! Also I found it helpful to review each chapter from the book before reading the relevant chapter of the fic. The ficcer does a little too much telling and not showing in regards to canon, and it can get a little tiring. The fic is worth it, though!

Inception

Map of the Sounds of Tokyo by fermine
genre/rating: Romance, R
author's summary: Robert is the new gaijin employee at Saito's big Tokyo based company. He's intelligent and hardworking, but trying to build a life in a new country amongst the hostility from his co-workers has put a dent in his confidence. He feels isolated and completely alone.
length: one-shot at 4,541 words
setting: AU, no movie spoilers
s2m's comments: Saito is overlooked by many fans, but he is in this fic full-force. Reading this delightful one-shot felt like reading a jousei manga! Of course, that can be a very good feeling, and in this case, it is. ^^ Yay!

Sharp Dressed Man by annundriel
genre/rating: Romance, NC-17
author's summary: Eames likes to watch Arthur dress.
length: one-shot at 2,410 words
setting: doesn't really matter, no spoilers for the end of the film
s2m's comments: I'm glad this one is a one-shot, because I couldn't stop reading! If it had been epic, I'd have been in trouble. My favorite bit involves the cufflinks. *sniffle* Also: Arthur slowly dressing...rowr! X3

Inuyasha

The Phoenix Blade: Time Lapse by Fenikkusuken
genre/rating: Adventure, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex, graphic violence
author's summary: COMPLETE. An AR riff on the anime. Kagome Higurashi, recent graduate of the Imperial Military Academy, finds all of her skills being put to the test in the Sengoku Jidai after she's sucked down the well at her family's shrine.
length: complete at 86 chapters, 1,182,069 words. The longest fic I've ever read!
setting: AU of the Naraku story arc
s2m's comments: I started this fic on a whim with no idea how long it really was, and found myself enjoying it immensely! I loved seeing this author's version of a capable and (occasionally) more mature Kagome. Watching the relationships develop and change between the characters was wonderful. I did have to take two breaks from reading this fic due to its sheer length, but I always came back with a smile, eager to resume! Get ready for some killer sex scenes. Oh my! *swoon*

NEW!!!1! Snowbound by Fenikkusuken
genre/rating: Drama, R
author's summary: OneShot. On a remote island off the coast of Japan, a woman confronts an unusual dog that may have been part of her past...
length: one-shot at 21,650 words
setting: 1996 with reincarnated!Rin
s2m's comments: This gripping oneshot is filled with beautiful winter imagery. Fenikkusuken gives us another lovely IY fic.

Ironman

Full of Surprises by ladylahatiel
genre/rating: Romance, Comedy, R
author's summary: While Tony was away, Jarvis changed. Tony is about to find out just how much.
length: complete at 6 chapters, 10,564 words
setting: towards the end of the first movie
s2m's comments: My curiosity at the pairing lured me into this one, much to my delight! It's fun to see Tony verbally spar with someone besides Pepper who can match his perosnality. I love how in-character Tony is. I can see perfectly how his behavior and the events in this fic could happen in canon! The author didn't link or tag the fic's other chapters, so here are the direct links: chapter 2, chapter 3 chapter 4, chapter 5, chapter 6

Jeeves & Wooster

All That Glitters is Not Gold by veronamay
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R
author's summary: Jeeves doesn't want tips from Bertie anymore. What could he want instead?
length: one-shot at 6,576 words
setting: later on in canon
s2m's comments: A rather topping story, what? *giggles* This fic is written in Wooster's distinctive vernacular, and it does take some time to adjust, but the effort is well worth it. My my my! *blush!

Fippy Elbows In by HelenaHandbasket
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, PG
author's summary: Wherein the attentions towards Jeeves instigated by the dashing young Fippy render Bertram in a state of panic, acrimony, and indefinable thing-ness.
length: one-shot at 12,203 words
setting: several years into Jeeves' employment
s2m's comments: A fun fic that made laugh with both humor and comisseration with poor Jeeves. That man has so much patience!! Another fic written in Wooster's vernacular.

Jeeves Makes a Move by veronamay
genre/rating: Drama, PG
author's summary: Schmoop. Christmas schmoop, even.
length: one-shot at 1,839 words

s2m's comments: This one makes me want to melt into a puddle of happy, tearful goo. *sniffles*

genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary can't be found, so: Jeeves tells of his life in the few months before he found new employment with a man who made a curious impression upon him: one Bertram Wooster.
length: one-shot at 5,278 words
setting: before they meet, can even be enjoyed without knowing much of canon
s2m's comments: A delightful and well-crafted fic, told in perfect Jeeves voice. It makes me want to track down more canon to read!

Yes, Sir, Jeeves by skyblue_reverie
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, NC-17 graphic sex
author's summary: Jeeves and Bertie swap roles at an upstate New York manor house as part of a plot to help Bertie's friend Larky. Wacky hijinx, along with a large helping of slashiness, ensue.
length: one-shot at 13,899 words
setting: Jeeves has been working for Wooster for a few years.
s2m's comments: Another enjoyable comedy for my fave master/manservant duo! Bertie is particularly obtuse yet still charming in this one. The OCs are very well done, too. Props to the author!

author's summary: Dr. Alan Grant pioneers the exciting new field of Anthropologic Paleontology.
length: long one-shot at 43,489 words
setting: movie 3, right after the egg-returning scene
s2m's comments: I must take off my hat and make a sweeping bow to this writer, because I never thought I'd have to fight back tears of sympathy for a velociraptor. *sniffles* This fic delivers an amazing story and take on the intelligence of raptors. I was completely captivated.

Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)

All's Flair In Love and War by amanuensis1
genre/rating: Comedy, G
author's summary: William never expected Grell could make him feel comfortable.
length: one-shot at 1,180 words
setting: begins mid first season
s2m's comments: Grell's flamboyance is captured perfectly in this fic, and it's brilliantly played against straight-laced William--particularly since this fic is told from the stoic William's point of view! Masterfully done. ^^

Kyou Kara Maou

To Bandarbia, with Love by mousapelli
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, R, mpreg
author's summary: chapter 1: Yozak does things without Conrad's permission, Yuuri is confused, and Gwendal's head talks too much. Chapter Two: Wolfram decides it's time to make the trip to Bandarbia. Yuuri has things to say about that. Gwendal cracks under the strain. Chapter 3: Greta is growing up way too fast, and Yuuri has a plan to keep her away from the scary boys.
length: complete at 3 chapters, 17,019 words
setting: after the first two series ends, but written two years before the actual canon ending
s2m's comments: As disturbing as it is for Yozak to deliberately "oops!" Conrad, this fic is fun and touching. But I say Annisina's inventions steal the show!! ^^V The author didn't tag or provide links, so here you go: chapter two: Roger That chapter three: Never Too Old

Without Knowing It by daisy_chan
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, R
author's summary: Someone's subconscious gets busy when he's asleep...

s2m's comments: I do love my Yuuri/Wolfram, and this fic has a completely brilliant premise. Wish I'd thought of it!! XD

Labyrinth

Into the Rose Garden by Dryad13
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R
author's summary: Sarah has good grades, a circle of friends, and a cute boyfriend. Life's great...right? So why does she have the strange feeling that something's missing? Fairy tales show that magic will make you or break you. Which category does she belong in?
length: complete at 22 chapters, 95,820 words
setting: 3 years after the movie
s2m's comments: This fic takes a line of dialogue from canon and spins it into an amazing tale of reprocussions. I had to force myself to stop reading for sleep and work, it was so engrossing! Well-written (if with the odd grammar error) and worth a read for anyone who has wondered what might happen between Sarah and Jareth in the future.

author's summary: How Mordecai Heller became wanted for murder in St. Louis, Missouri: a story in five years, five hours, and one irascible Slav.
length: one-shot at 17,090 words words
setting: before canon starts
s2m's comments: Sometimes fics that are recced everywhere are recced for a reason, and this fic definitely deserves to be read! It offers an amazing look into Moredcai's personality, sets up a reason why he chose to leave Atlas and Mitzi's employ, and ohhhh, his partnership with Viktor is beautiful to behold. Truly the Yuletide receiver was lucky to be gifted this fic!

Lord of the Rings

Bagenders by Lady Alyssa and Random Flatmate
genre/rating: Comedy, PG-13, insanity
author's summary: And it came to pass that the fellowship were granted immortality for they had saved middle earth; and so they went their separate ways... But some fellowships were not meant to be broken... History has become legend; legend has become myth and myth has become merchandising: A three-bedroom semi in a town in the north of England, 2001. An AU where the fellowship become immortal, and end up living together in the house share from hell. Based on both movie and books, hence strange attempts to write Merry and Pippin's accents.
length: complete but with no ending at 29 chapters, a whole bunch of words
setting: real world AU after movies and books end
s2m's comments: This one is only for LotR fans with a sense of humor. Seriously. If you don't think you can handle a neurotic Frodo on medication, Legolas stuck in a dead-end job, and Gandalf a tv-obsessed alcoholic, you'd best pass this one by. ^^;; It IS completely hilarious, and I bet it would be even funnier if I could understand half the British in-jokes and pop culture references. Feud by erobey
genre/rating: Drama, NC-17, graphic sex, graphic violence, torture, rape, and some incest to top it all off. Yeek!
author's summary: Before the council, an Elrond/Legolas dark story
length: stalled WIP at 125 chapters, 615,272 words
setting: begins near the end of The Hobbit, at the Battle of the Five Armies. Many references to events in the Silmarillion, as well.
s2m's comments: If you want a fic full of elf slash, then this one's for you! The author was quite Tolkien-esque with excessive narrative style, complete with long descriptive passages about the scenery and emotions of the characters. I admit, around chapter 75 I started skimming the almost-purple prose. While it DOES go on and on, the mystery at the heart of the story kept me reading. And the cat metaphors are only that one instance, I swear! ^^;; Fans of Elrond be wary, there's Elrond-bashing within! Also prepare to learn some Elvish...

The Price of Freedom by Erin Lasgalen
genre/rating: Adventure, Romance, R
author's summary: AU Adventure. In the aftermath of the War of the Ring, Eowyn comes to the painful realization that the wounds of the heart she still bears cannot be healed by going back to the cage, however gilded, however loving the master.
length: complete at 7 chapters, 131,993 words
setting: begins in The Two Towers, but the vast part of the story is set four years after the end of the War of the Ring
s2m's comments: "Epic" is the only way to describe this one. Whoa! It references events in bookverse, particularly the Silmarillion, but I have not read that and still enjoyed the story. This fic is most definitely NOT a shallow Eowyn/Legolas self-insert. The author has synonym problems and mixes up or omits smaller prepositions, but the story easily outshines the errors (even if a horse's "reigns" are one of my pet peeves).

They Say of the Elves by Brancher
genre/rating: Drama, PG
author's summary: Legolas and Gimli explore the caves of Helm's Deep and Fanghorn, together, after RotK.
length: one-shot at 1,706 words
setting: a little in Fellowship, then after Return of the King
s2m's comments: The friendship between Gimli and Legolas was my favorite thing about the books when I first read the trilogy as an early teenager, and as an adult now, it still is. I've always been bothered by how many ficcers refuse to give Gimli his time with Legolas, but this small jewel of a fic does so beautifully. Oh, Gimli! Let me hug you! :D

length: one-shot at 14,568 words
setting: AU of book 1, though only watching the film is plenty. This one can be read as original fiction, no knowledge of canon required!
s2m's comments: Giving this series a fantasy AU bent never occurred to me, but really like how the author worked it. ^^ Stephen is as passionate about his interests here as he is in canon, and even MORE passionate about Jack, much to my delight. :3 I consider this fic a lucky find for me. I read it only knowing it was M&C "marriage of convenience" fic, and it turned out to be amazing! It's wonderful when you read a story blind and it pays off. Kyaa!

genre/rating: Drama, PG
author's summary: Randall has been in the swamp a bit too long... Not a humor fic.
length: one-shot at 3,577 words

s2m's comments: Randall is my fave character from the movie, and this fic gives us a sad glimpse of his fate in the bayou. The writing has some problems, but they are outweighed by the powerful ending. *sniffles*

Naruto

Accounting no Jutsu by daniel-gudman
genre/rating: Comedy, G
author's summary: Lots of people have postulated that Naruto's good at financial planning. Let's follow that thought a little farther into the future.
length: one-shot at 1,123 words
setting: AU before Shippuuden, but it kind of doesn't matter in this one
s2m's comments: Bahahahahah!! XD Good humor fic is so hard to find!! =D

Beginnings by Rayneken
genre/rating: Comedy, PG
author's summary: Naruto was six years old when he met the man who changed his life. ...Now he's kind of just hoping he survives it.
length: complete at 11 chapters, 84,996 words
setting: AU starting before volume 1, but it's best to have read canon through volume 50 or you might be rather lost at times.
s2m's comments: Here's a fun one! The fluff can be so cute it hurts, but the author balances it with some great comedy and darker moments. It does have a rather large number of canon-defying pop culture references, but they are easily forgiven. I really enjoyed reading this fic!

Break in the Routine by maldoror_gw
genre/rating: Drama, Comedy, PG-13
author's summary: No official one, so here's my version: Kakashi is used to his routine of training, reading his books, and dealing with Gai's unending challenges. But Gai proposes a new kind of challenge, and Kakashi's peaceful(?) life is suddenly thrown rather off-kilter.
length: complete at 4 chapters and an epilogue, 18,469 words
setting: beginning of Shippuuden
s2m's comments: Maldoror's Gai-sensei is magnificent! Full of Youthful Vigor and the Power of Spring! Poor Kakashi never stood a chance. Eeeeheeheee! Diplomatic Relations by maldoror_gw
genre/rating: Drama, Action, NC-17, graphic sex

length: complete at 23 chapters, four side stories, and an epilogue. I have no idea how many words, but it's quite a large number, I'm sure. ^^
setting: just before the Rescue Gaara Shippuuden arc
s2m's comments: One of the most famous Naruto fics out there, and for good reason. If you ever thought Lee/Gaara could never work, read this fic and see if you still consider them a crack pairing. *wink* :9

Distracting and a Great Bother by slr2moons
genre/rating: Drama, Suspense, PG-13
author's summary: Gaara is fished out of the river by a woman who quickly realizes that might not have been the best idea.
length: complete at 7 chapters, 23,559 words
setting: between the Chuunin Exam and Sasuke Retrieval story arcs
s2m's comments: Gaara changed so much after Naruto beat a conscience into him, and this fic explores what else might have happened to change him during that fragile time. A fic that's a bit different from the norm, I believe. ^^

author's summary: After the time skip, Jiraiya and Naruto have returned to Konoha. Tsunade begins to realize that she wants Jiraiya as much more than just a friend. But she's convinced that her duties as Hokage take precedence and she's also afraid to love someone and then lose them again. However, she should know that with Jiraiya it's easier just to give in.
length: complete at 8 chapters, 10,982 words
setting: early Shippuuden
s2m's comments: This is the first romance fic I've read involving Tsunade, and it's set the bar quite high! A good read, complete with temperamental Tsunade and delightfully devious Jiraiya. I rather enjoyed how Tsunade has to work for it; she doesn't just crook her finger and have Jiraiya jumping into her arms. I particularly admire how the author uses the Icha Icha books. ^^

Foxtrail by Becky Tailweaver
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: Naruto follows an unusual trail and discovers that even the most hated of enemies can leave someone behind to mourn them.
length: one-shot, 3,960 words
setting: sometime before Shippuuden
s2m's comments: This fic is a curious mixture of subtle and obvious, but it works! A powerful one-shot.

The Kakashi Mission by JBMcDragon
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R or NC-17 depending on which version of a couple chapters you choose read, graphic sex if you partake of it
author's summary, shortened by s2m: They sat in silence for a while. Iruka sipped tea, watching people walk past the little building. Kakashi's eye was closed, his hands linked behind his head and making a worse mess of his hair than it already was. "Gai's pretty sure you have a crush on me," Kakashi said. Iruka coughed his tea all over the porch.
length: complete at 19 chapters and a prologue, ~35,000 words
setting: after Team 7 separates
s2m's comments: Once again, I find myself somehow reading and enjoying KakaIru! This emotionally damaged version of Kakashi-sensei is rather extreme, but the author does a good job of showing how he became this way. Thankfully the fic does have a lot of comic relief to balance it out.

Need by link no miko
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, G
author's summary: When Lee first met Sakura, all he had to go on was that she was beautiful and strong and fully alive in her own little Spring.
length: one-shot at 1,048 words
setting: before Shippuuden
s2m's comments: A lovely little one-shot that handles Lee/Sakura very well, without ignoring Sakura's Sasuke obsession and keeping both her and Lee IC. Very good. *nods*

Not So Clear, the Sky by Fairady
genre/rating: Humor, Romance, G
author's summary: Shikamaru's favorite spot to watch the clouds from has been invaded.
length: complete at three chapters, 3,285 words
setting: sometime before Shippuuden
s2m's comments: An endearing story about an irritated Shikamaru trying to figure out the motives of the ever-silent Shino.

Outclassed by WinterOfOurDiscontent
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, PG-13
author's summary: Hatake Kakashi is a jounin. Umino Iruka is only a chuunin. But this time, Kakashi's outclassed. KakaIru, shounenai.
length: abandoned WIP at 12 chapters, 15,027 words
setting: in the sweet, innocent span between Team 7's formation and their meeting Zabuza and Haku
s2m's comments: I never thought I'd like a KakaIru fic, but this one proved me wrong. The humor won me over, and her characterizations are great. Gai almost steals the show! A shame it's stalled, but what's up is a great read.

Perception by Cynchick
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: The Akatsuki think Sakura will be the perfect bait to lure the Kyuubi but they get a whole lot more than they planned for. A story about the blurred line between good and evil and how what we think we know can be proven very, very wrong. ItaSaku
length: complete at 20 chapters, 176,388 words
setting: AU after chapter 330/volume 38, specifically the death of a certain villain
s2m's comments: I have to give this author credit: rather than belting out a straight-forward romance fic, they invested the effort to give us a thought-provoking and painful exploration of how mutual understanding between enemies can make things difficult for both sides. This one is a satisfying read and not for the faint of heart.

Silver Lining by Cynchick
genre/rating: Romance, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: Sequel to Perception. Eight years ago they said goodbye forever. Now, when they have both lost everything, fate has thrown them together again in the most unlikely of ways. (Highlight for pairing spoiler)DeiSaku.
length: complete at 15 chapters, 126,010 words
setting: 8 years after events in Silver Lining
s2m's comments: This one is a straight-forward romance fic that nicely satisfied my "Am I crazy, or..." wonderings while reading the prequel. It starts angsty and turns rather mushy, but then Sakura is a very passionate person! *shameless grin* Hey, I like fluff sometimes! :D

Possession by Fractured Dreams
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R
author's summary: When you've lost everything you've ever held dear in your heart, it's hard to pick up the pieces and start again. But Naruto gets a chance to rebuild his life and find peace with his past. And perhaps, to find love with another. Shounen ai, Sas x naru, AU
length: WIP at 36 chapters, 171,232 words
setting: real world AU, no shinobi at all
s2m's comments: This Sasuske/Naruto fic takes fandom clichés and shows how they can work in the hands of a good writer. You can watch her writing improve as the story progresses. In fact, I was so engrossed with her story that I didn't mind the grammar mistakes and typos all over the beginning in the slightest. This fic is an exception in that the characters are wildly OOC, but...her versions work. XD And it has horses it in!! Kyaaa!! *was a horse otaku in days gone by*

Self-Reliance by Imbrium Iridum
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R, mpreg
author's summary: It's an unwritten rule that there will be a rebirthed Uchiha clan. Sasuke just doesn't trust a woman enough to do it right. Mpreg, NaruSasu.
length: abandoned WIP at 16 chapters, 143,385 words
setting: after Sasuke leaves Konoha
s2m's comments: Quite possibly the most famous Naruto mpreg fic out there. Fun and enjoyable! The fanbrats pressured the author into quitting the fic, but what's up is still a great read.

Somewhere I Have Never Traveled, Gladly Beyond by Wyntermute
genre/rating: Adventure, Romance, PG-13
author's summary: Naruto had been bragging all day that his new jutsu was his best yet. Sakura and her new situation beg to differ. Post timeskip. DeiSaku.
length: complete at 16 chapters, 82,164 words
setting: after the Rescue Gaara Shippuuden arc
s2m's comments: I admit, this pairing had never occurred to me, but the summary made me decide to try the fic, and the story grabbed me from there. Very good, and not cliché!!

Sound of Dreams, The by zrina
genre/rating: Adventure, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex, non-con, and graphic violence
author's summary: On the eve of being confined to the village to keep the Kyuubi out of Akatsuki's hands, Naruto leaves Konoha to try one last time to save Sasuke from Orochimaru
length: complete at 73 chapters, 248,054 words
setting: goes AU in chapter 332, when Naruto is in the middle of his [highlight for spoiler]wind chakra training.
s2m's comments: A magnificent epic in both plot and emotions! It takes guts to write fic this huge in scope. I am very impressed with zrina, especially since the author says this is their first fanfic. O.o I am humbled by their talents!

Team 8 by S'TarKan
genre/rating: Adventure, PG-13
author's summary: What if Naruto had been selected for a different team? What if he'd had a different mentor? Who would guess the consequences would be so large?
length: stalled WIP at 21 chapters, 239,768 words
setting: AU, starting at Naruto's graduation from the Ninja Academy. Yes, the very beginning!
s2m's comments: O.o This fic is officially my Naruto favorite. Yes, you heard me!! The author has done a breathtaking job of creating an amazing, workable AU with Naruto belonging to a different team. The changes this makes in his character, his teammates, and to canon events are completely believable and something that must be experienced. This fic is on my top 10 list, no doubt about it.

Three Months by kaotic312
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, PG-13
author's summary: When the girls get together, watch out! They're making lists and checking it twice. Are the guys in or out? Shika, Neji, Naruto, and Sasuke are now declared 'undateable' by the girls. Who does that leave? Rated T for language.
length: complete at 50 chapters, 238,222 words
setting: after vol36/Shippuuden ep88, but does reference later canon events
s2m's comments: If you need to laugh, then this fic will deliver! It certainly doesn't feel like a 200k+ epic, either. ^^V Beyond just the humor, this author makes the various relationships develop realistically and with appropriately placed friction. *adjusts halo* Fans of Lee and Sai do not despair, those two boys aren't left out at all! X3

The Twenty-Fifth Rule by paxnirvana
genre/rating: Drama, PG
author's summary: Iruka struggles with Kakashi over the value of his role as teacher to Naruto.
length: one-shot at 4,887 words
setting: just before the Chuunin Exam
s2m's comments: This fic explores the aftermath of the famous Kakashi/Iruka pre-Exam argument. The author spun canon into a very plausible moment. I must applaud!

NCIS

(Un)covered by rageprufrock
genre/rating: Romance, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary: Toni has spent her entire life hopelessly in love with people.
length: one-shot at 27,099 words
setting: genderswap!Tony AU, starts with ep 54 (season 3) and later references events in season 6
s2m's comments: This is the first genderswap I've ever read (Ranma doesn't count because it's Ranma), and I am very impressed! I think the author did an amazing job of taking the male Tony we know from canon and spinning him into a believable woman. An in-character woman, at that! I believe I will be hard-pressed to find a second genderswap fic as good as this one. ^^

Ouran High School Host Club

NEW!!!1! In the Circle of Elemental Arms by Kryssa's flute
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, R
author's summary: Magic runs strong in the students of Ouran, even in one klutzy scholarship student.
length: complete at 25 chapters, 146,588 words
setting: AU with magic
s2m's comments: This fic was a joy to read! I love the addition of magic to the craziness of Ouran, and the author kept everyone beautifully IC. Her original chapters are stronger than the ones based on canon, but even the latter were still a good read. This fic has a very powerful and emotional ending, as well. I approve!

It's Not Always Rainbows and Butterflies by TaleWeaver
genre/rating: Drama, PG
author's summary: Bits and pieces of Kyouya and Haruhi's life together, and why they work not in chronological order. Complete for now, will change status if I ever get around to writing more.
length: one-shot at 1,471 words
setting: varies, you need to have read through vol 15 or so. Just the anime isn't enough.
s2m's comments: Kyoya's canon romantic disinterest in Haruhi has always left me rather disappointed, so I am very glad to have found this fic! The third section in particular is brilliant. ^^

length: complete at 7 chapters, 47,118 words
setting: Kyouya and Tamaki's senior year
s2m's comments: We are given glimpses through canon of Kyoya's potential for darkness, and this fic develops them to the utmost. It's powerful, full of pain, and beautifully written.

One Piece

The Red Coast by maldoror_gw
genre/rating: Adeventure, Comedy, PG-13
author's summary: No official one, so allow me: The Brotherhood of the Red Coast are usually shipwreck salvagers, but when the Straw Hats arrive in the Brotherhood's waters, they decide to expand to pirate bounty hunting with the expected results.
length: one-shot at 3,819 words
setting: post Alabastia story arc
s2m's comments: This fic captures the joyful innocence and exuberance that is One Piece! XD I also love reading about canon characters when told from an outsider's POV, and this fic is another lovely example of that. A lighthearted adventure!

Seven Deaths by X-parrot
genre/rating: Drama, R, implied torture
author's summary: Sanji makes a mistake, and Zoro may be his only chance of surviving the consequences.
length: complete at 14 chapters, 49,582 words
setting: post Alabastia story arc
s2m's comments: A powerful and painful fic, particularly since Sanji's mental breakdown through his ordeal is expertly and unflinchingly rendered. Yeeeeek! *shiver* I was impressed with the author's explanation for the reasoning behind Sanji's torment. Not what he did to earn it, but why the culture inflicts it upon transgressers. This fic can be read as pre-slash or straight-up friendship, whichever you prefer.

Pirates of the Caribbean

The African Star by ErinRua
genre/rating: Action-adventure, PG
author's summary: An unscrupulous slave ship captain, a royal gem, and a perilous hunt that will span sea and storm as Jack and Will embark on adventure once more.
length: complete at 32 chapters, 91,448 words
setting: after movie 1
s2m's comments: I like this fanfic more than the two actual movie sequels. ^^;; Jack Sparrow is so perfectly in character it's breathtaking. Fun, fast-paced, easy to follow, and very exciting. As delightful as the film! The first chapter alone is worth a rec. Heeeeeee.

Eye of the Storm by Edoraslass
genre/rating: Drama, PG
author's summary: She didn't write one, so I did: A Tortuga barmaid sadly watches the slow deterioration of Norrington as he visits her family's pub almost every night.
length: one-shot at 4,255 words
setting: right before movie 2
s2m's comments: The most rare of fic creatures: a well-written first-person POV OC fic! The author did a great job capturing the voice of a low-class girl without her being annoying or perfect. The fic has amazing detail in bit parts and side characters, everyone named has a personality. The OC is very likable and endearing, and I can't help but feel pity for poor Norrington. Definitely worth a read!

Negotiations by Marnie
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, PG-13
author's summary: Making enough space in the world to contain both Commodore Norrington and Captain Jack Sparrow is going to take some tricky negotiations.
length: complete at 7 chapters, 19,589 words
setting: after movie 1
s2m's comments: If my anguished cry of "That's it?!??! NOOOOO!" was any gauge, then this fic is rather good. I wish I could wave my magic wand and turn it into an epic, but alas. We must be content with 20,000 words. *frustrated noise* This one is full of hidden gems and magnificent one-liners. I'm officially a Jack/Norrington shipper now. Most definitely!

Pride and Prejudice

Happenstance by Abby B
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R
author's summary, and it's a mouthful: Elizabeth Bennet believed the world had genuinely gone mad. As she frantically paced the grounds immediately surrounding Longbourn, she realized that all the judiciousness that she thought existed in her universe seemed to have vanished, and the result was pandemonium. Suddenly, she recognized that her previous ordered existence--truly little more than merely a facade--had all began to go horribly wrong three days ago, yet, to Elizabeth, the recklessness that had resulted felt as if it had been ever-present.
length: complete at 26 chapters, 186,956 words
setting: after the Netherfield Ball
s2m's comments: Mr Darcy! Such scandalous behavior!! *gasp* Witnessing the fallout of his and Elizabeth's social faux pas and eventual understanding in this fic is really something. The first section of is written in Jane Austen's style to a fault. Be sure to read through to the second page, where the author finds the balance between modern English and Regency English. The fic does address the other two important relationships in the book, it isn't just a Darcy/Elizabeth story. BTW, I hope you like pink. ^^

Love and Other Accidents by paperclipz
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, PG-13
author's summary: modern P and P. Darcy and Bingley are musicians trying to find material for their new album in a rural college town...where they meet the Bennet twins who are surviving college together. Lizzy's a photographer, and Jane's a med student.
length: complete at 19 chapters, 197,861 words
setting: real world AU
s2m's comments: It's better than the summary sounds, really! The AU versions of the classic characters are fun and engaging. The modern setting is made to work with the story, rather than exist despite it. I suggest stopping once the fic reaches the book's ending.

genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: An ordinary enough morning, opening into the leading edge of a new story.

s2m's comments: This fic is bittersweet and so very, very powerful. If you enjoyed the series, be sure to read this one.

Ranma 1/2

Ranma's...Husband? by roses-are-a-weed
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, PG-13
author's summary: Life in Nerima only ever gets more chaotic...will this be Ranma’s breaking point? In which everyone in Ranma’s life proves just how inexplicably stupid they can be...sort of. Other stuff also happens. Pairings include: DualGenderedRanma/OMC and Akane/Mousse
length: complete at 36 chapters, 165,698 words
setting: after Nodoka enters canon
s2m's comments: I devoured this fic in 24 hours. :D The writing is very rough at the beginning, but it does--slowly--improve. This is another instance of a story's intrigue outweighing the technical problems. This one has some unusual plot wrinkles (Kasumi has a libido OMG), very likable OCs, and made me consider certain aspects of canon from a different angle. I feel I should point out the author's admitted dislike of Ryouga and particularly of Shampoo results in some serious character bashing. The author also believes in long author's notes; I ended up skipping them after a few chapters because they could be rather spoilery. Regardless, this fic is an engrossing read! It does leave lots of loose ends, but I still think it's well worth it.

genre/rating: Comedy, R
author's summary: When Tsuna injures his hands Gokuedera is set on doing everything for him, but maybe Gokudera takes his devotion a little too far.
length: one-shot at 3,019 words
setting: Doesn't really matter, as long as you know who Gokudera is!
s2m's comments: I always admire an author who goes the extra step and writes a fic that is more than random hawtness and sexytiems. Stariceling does an excellent job of that here, taking a ridiculous situation and turning it into a powerful story that still has the feel of canon. *salutes*

author's summary: Tokio and Saitou are two of a kind. Too bad they don't know about it.
length: complete at 12 chapters, 42,627 words
setting: just before the Meiji Revolution, so 10 years before the series starts
s2m's comments: All we know of Saitou's wife in canon is that she exists. This fic gives us a romance-novel-style tale of how they met and the shenanigans their romance endured. If you enjoy Nora Roberts, this one's for you! A very fun fic. ^^V

Samurai Champloo

As Lovers Go by Arabesque05
genre/rating: Romance, PG-13
author's summary: There is no perfect love story. But he tells her, whimsical and smiling, they would have what happily ever after there exists because this is easy as lovers go. Or something like that.
length: one-shot at 8,087 words
setting: begins right before the end of the anime
s2m's comments: This fic is written in an unusual style, almost stream-of-conscious, that makes a sweet story truly powerful. Rather than reading about the development of Fuu and Jin's relationship over time, we can experience it first-hand. Shortfic at its best, I must say. ^^

Barbless Hook, The by lynnmonster
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary can't be found, so: Jin feels aimless and disillusioned after the trio parts. After all, he's had something, and now he has time to feel its lack.
length: one-shot at 7,928 words
setting: after the anime
s2m's comments: I was surprised how quickly this fic has Jin and Mugen taking their friendship to the next level, but I think it works. I'm entranced by the thought of Jin's appearance by the end of the fic! Makes me want to draw some fanart. X3 A short, satisfying read!

NEW!!!1! Laura Bryannan's Samurai Champloo AU by Laura Bryannan
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17, graphic sex
author's summary doesn't exist for the entire epic, so here's my take: Mugen, Jin, and Fuu are all drawn to each other from almost the moment they met, and in more ways than simple companionship. How can it possibly work out?
length: complete at 41 individual fics, 163,620 words
setting: retelling of the entire series and far beyond the anime's ending
s2m's comments: This fic is a very satisfying read, particularly since it adheres to the romance of the threesome holding together despite all their problems, both outside and within. The author writes most of it in first-person, alternating between the three characters. She delightfully adapts her style to fit the personalities of each narrator, and I am impressed by her skills! The occasional third-person chapter is a shock and not nearly as well-written, but stick it out. Overall, the fic is very enjoyable and satisfying.

Nenju by 3Jane
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17, graphic violence and graphic sex
author's summary: Where do happiness and ever after intersect? FuuMugenJin.
length: complete at 36 chapters, 144,514 words
setting: two years after the anime ends
s2m's comments: This emotional fic brought me to tears twice, and that is a very rare thing! *sniffle* Excellent characterization and use of researched history. This fic includes characters taken from the entire anime, so I suggest you either rewatch or find a good list of side characters to avoid being confused. The version I linked above has some formatting problems early on. If that bothers you, try the mirror on AFF.net, in which all italics and some sentences have been stripped. D=

Temptation Kunishige by Angrybee
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: One hot night, Jin and Mugen catch a glimpse of something not meant for their eyes. Jin tries to cope with almost certain temptation while reflecting on their journey. Mild nudity. Adult references.
length: one-shot at 2,227 words
setting: after ep 12
s2m's comments: A beautiful fic with delightful use of symbolism and imagery. More than the literary angle, though, it gives us a fascinating look into Jin and how he feels about Fuu and Mugen both. Lovely!

Scooby Doo

The Road This Far Can't be Retraced by silverpenlight
genre/rating: PG-13, Action, Horror
author's summary, shortened by s2m: Velma saved them in the end. She knew she did, she wasn't shy about it. Her research gave them machetes, chainsaws and shotguns, garlic and holy water, silver bullets. She was the first one to take aim and squeeze off four shots, the last one taking the zombie right through the forehead and knocking him down hard before he could take a bite out of Fred's arm.
length: one-shot at 3,434 words
setting: horror AU, inspired by the Threadless T-shirt shown at the top of the fic's page
s2m's comments: I can't help but marvel at how much more appealing this fic is over canon. Dark and glorious!

Sherlock Holmes

A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman (yes, really)
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13

length: one-shot at around 7,000 words
setting: bookverse AU
s2m's comments: I love it when a fic knocks me off-balance, and Mr. Gaiman achieved that in spades. Awesome! Definitely deserving of its Hugo win! XD The next time someone bashes fanfiction as pointless and a waste of time, I'm going to shove this fic under their nose. HA!

length: one-shot at 2,890 words
setting: early in the manga through the end of volume 25
s2m's comments: I liked how this fic lets us follow Kanae's and Kyoko's friendship through their cell phones. Kanae's thoughts on Kyoko's crazy life are a hilarious touch. A sweet friendship fic!

At His Back by Golden meliades
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: Yashiro prefers not to think of it as being in Ren's shadow...
length: one-shot at 2,236 words
setting: between vol 18 and vol 25
s2m's comments: An introspective one-shot that sheds some light on the fallout of being Ren's manager. This fic is a rare gen!fic jewel in an ocean of mediocre het. I'm glad I found it!

Closing Games by Golden meliades
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: The Dark Moon crew goes into work one last time. Some Kyoko x Ren. Oneshot.
length: one-shot at 6,672 words
setting: the wrap party for Dark Moon, which hasn't happened yet in canon. As long as you know who the drama's cast are, you're fine.
s2m's comments: The setup for this fic seemed a bit much, but I kept reading and was glad I did! Bittersweet and solidly written. ^^

Light and Dark Kisses by cbee
genre/rating: Comedy, PG
author's summary, don't hold it against the fic!: Kyoko & Ren's first kiss and Mr. Yashiro gets a visit from the Dark Lord! My first fan fic so reviews more than welcomed!
length: complete at 5 chapters, 3,844 words
setting: after Act 114
s2m's comments: This bit of hilarity is another example of a fic's charms overcoming its technical drawbacks. Ren is slightly OOC, but the story is so fun and its delightful use of my beloved Mr. Yashiro so refreshing that I couldn't help but enjoy it. Read this one for laughs!

Lip Gloss by Golden meliades
genre/rating: Comedy, G
author's summary: Ren's pride has been smarting ever since his encounter with Sho at Karuizawa. Isn't there anything he can do to wipe that smug look off Fuwa's face? One-shot.
length: one-shot at 3,397 words
setting: after the incidents in Karuizawa/Act 95 or so
s2m's comments: This one made me laugh! XD Oh, Ren. *snicker*

NEW!!!1! Loved Girl, The by peroxidepest17
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, G
author's summary: The Japanese tabloids enjoy picking apart Ren and Kyoko's latest drama.
length: one-shot at 3,152 words
setting: no definite point in canon, but I suggest you've read through volume 15 more for character development than spoilers
s2m's comments: This fic takes the trope of Ren, Sho, and Kyoko acting in the same drama and makes it WORK delightfully well. Sho's frustration is perfection, and Kyoko and Ren are enjoyable to watch interract, and even Yashiro's continuing shipping hopes are fabulous. This fic could easily be part of canon!

Manager's Devotion, A by hazukashiijousan
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: Yashiro will sacrifice anything to help Ren's career succeed, even his own emotions. But is that really the best for Ren? Drama.
length: WIP at 6 chapters, 16,335 words
setting: inside the Dark Moon story arc, so after volume 13/Act 78/the end of the anime
s2m's comments: I fully believe Mr. Yashiro is gay, even though it's never been confirmed in canon. It's fun to find a fic where he not only IS, but is in love with Ren! Kyaaa! X3 I really like what this author has done with the story so far, it's wonderfully different from the Skip Beat fanfic norm! :D

New Clothes and the Emperor by Deja-You
genre/rating: Comedy, PG

length: one-shot at 2,900 words
setting: later in the Dark Moon arc
s2m's comments: Ren's dark side comes up rather often in Skip fic, but this author uses it with skill. ^^ I think I shivered when Kyoko did! Oh my! *blush*

Snowfall by kitsuneirei88
genre/rating: Romance, G
author's summary: It's Christmas Eve, and LME has given all of its employees a couple of days off. Thinking Ren might be lonely, Yashiro sends Kyoko to see him.
length: complete at 3 chapters, 12,645 words
setting: after Act 110, but if you know who "Mio" is, you'll be fine.
s2m's comments: In a fandom that is focused on the main canon(?) couple, this fic stands out for solid writing and characters who are actually in-character. It's always nice when that happens, hmm? ^^ This fic made me d'awww and laugh and even squee, so I recommend it for anyone who needs some sweetness in their day.

author's summary: The media speculates about the men in Kyoko's life. Yashiro despairs.
length: one-shot at 1,998 words
setting: you need to have met Reino
s2m's comments: This is a fun one-shot that features my favorite Skip character, Mr. Yashiro. ^^ The author did a great job reflecting both the over-the-top drama and insanity found in the manga!

Stalking Tsuruga Ren? by momoirousagichan
genre/rating: Comedy, G
author's summary: Someone is following Tsuruga Ren's schedule really, really closely.
length: one-shot at 764 words
setting: up to vol 6
s2m's comments: Hahaha! Another unusual jem in the reams of fics that are Ren/Kyoko romance. ^^

To Build of Shattered Pieces by Chelsea Deanne
genre/rating: Drama, Comedy, PG
author's summary: A collection of oneshots. Be prepared to love, hate, and flip back through your manga.
length: stalled WIP at 5 chapters, 5,371 words
setting: after Act 151, which is the first chapter in vol 26
s2m's comments: I admire when an author makes canon work for them and manages to give it new depth, too! Chelsea Deann's series of oneshots is a stellar example. Her Moko steals the show! ^^

Wink, a Poke, a Gentle Shove, A by MadnessinmyMethod
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, PG
author's summary: Because Kuu wants to know when Kyouko will be his legal daughter. Because the managers have been planning this all along. Because sometimes all you need is a gentle shove. RenxKyouko.
length: complete at 15 chapters, 42,572 words
setting: If you know about Princess Rosa, you're good
s2m's comments: This is a sweet almost-epic about the fandom's favorite couple, along with an amusing dash of Yashiro/Kanae. The author does make a few mistakes with honorifics and the movie business, but the fic was enjoyable enough that I can forgive them. ^^

Your Kyoko-chan by C.Queen
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, T
author's summary: Ren never imagined that agreeing to give Kyoko a ride home would cause so many problems. Both get in major trouble when a talkshow host calls Kyoko on stage to explain her feelings for Ren and it only gets worse from there on in.
length: complete at 12 chapters, 38,658 words
setting: You definitely need to know who Natsu is to enjoy this one.
s2m's comments: This fic starts of strong and is quite enjoyable! The author does turn rather vicious when two characters get their comeuppance. I like how she handled Sho and Kyoko at the end. Note this fic has a surprising number of spelling errors--including canon names--for one with this level of plotting and characterization, but the story overshadows them and kept me reading.

Snow White

Not Everyone Gets A Happily Ever After by MissusPatches
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: We all know how, in the end, Snow White was carried off by her Prince in yet another one of those cliché Happily-Ever-Afters. But did she ever stop to think about what she was leaving behind..? A one sided romance.
length: one-shot at 2,706 words
setting: after the Disney movie ends
s2m's comments: This one has to be experienced. Whoa. O.o

South Park

I Feel So by Brat-Child3
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R
author's summary: I hugged myself and let out a sob: longing for the comfort of his smile, his touch. I was so sick. So sick and tired of being angry. In one clear moment, I realized how hopeless it had all been, and I asked myself: Now what?
length: complete at 19 chapters, 89,610 words
setting: high school
s2m's comments: Sometimes a story affects me so strongly I can't read it in one sitting, I have to take breaks to gain some distance. Yeah, this is one of them. A very powerful fic! My first SP fic ever, and it's going to take one hell of a fic to top it! (Kyle/Stan)

Lex Talionis by Foodstamp
genre/rating: Drama, R, off-screen rape and torture
author's summary: Years after losing contact with their childhood friends, Detectives Marsh and McCormick pick up a domestic abuse case that exposes their own dark history. Kenny's POV, StanxKyle and secret pairings, mature. Still need to post the epilogue, sorry!
length: technically stalled WIP at 4 chapters, 73,228 words
setting: the guys are 26
s2m's comments: Every so often a fic leaves me speechless from awe. I'd heard the author was good, but WHOA! O.o A true murder mystery, told in gripping first-person style. It is complete as-is, though I wouldn't mind that epilogue being posted one day! Cartman fans beware.

Red String by the pink striper
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, R, Cartman
author's summary: When Stan Marsh decides that he wants more out of his super best friendship with Kyle Broflovski, a lovesick Kyle has no choice but to accept. Now Kyle has two years or less to convince Stan to love him back. If only things were that simple.
length: stalled WIP at 9 chapters, 131,769 words
setting: high school
s2m's comments: You know I love comedy, and this fic reads just like an insane South Park ep. Kenny even dies a couple of times! *snicker* I felt obligated to warn for Cartman, as he is in fine form in this one. O= The comedy slacks off a bit as the series progresses, but compared with I Feel So above, it's a barrel full of monkeys! =D Also: hot kisses. VERY hot kisses. Toe-curling kisses!!! X3

Spirited Away

Natural Selection by murinae and aishuu
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: After marrying Chihiro, it's Haku's turn to explore a new world. Haku must navigate human life as he struggles to find his place as a god in a faithless, electronic age.
length: complete at 8 chapters, 31,400 words
setting: a few years after the film ends
s2m's comments: Most fanfic is centered around romance of some sort, but this story is about personal growth and changing relationships between people. The fic could have been left a shallow "OMG let's hook them up!!1!" squee-fest, but the authors had higher ambitions, much to my pleasure!

Star Wars

Blind Light by Cara J. Loup
genre/rating: Drama, R
author's summary can't be found, so...: Han is locked in a cell and suffering from the agony of hibernation sickness, but at least he's not alone. Luke is with him.
length: one-shot at 7,217 words
setting: Return of the Jedi, after Han is released from the carbonite and before he, Luke, and Chewie are on the ship over the carnivorous pit
s2m's comments: The original trilogy has long held a special place in my heart. It was a big part of my childhood, particularly since Luke was my first fictional crush. I'd believed the original trilogy could never be improved, but now...I'm a puddle of happy goo after finishing this fic. Oh, how much more I can see in my beloved old favorite!

Force Bond 1: Orphan by KittandChips
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, G

length: complete at 13 chapters, 49,821 words
setting: when Luke is 11
s2m's comments: This one is fun and uplifting. The writing is believable and characterization top-notch. The kids act like kids, Vader is an imposing force, and the Emperor delightfully manipulative. And ohhh, Obi-Wan...

Force Bond 2: Threat by KittandChips
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, G
author's summary: (highlight to read) Luke finds himself moving in with a moody, secluded Sith Lord who is also his newly found father. Vader has his own set of challenges to overcome, as he struggles to come to terms with his fatherhood.
length: complete at 15 chapters, 79,725 words
setting: when Luke is 11
s2m's comments: The saga continues! The author is certainly making her characters work for it, I must say. If things were easy, the fic would be boring, no? A solid continuation! ^^

Force Bond: Empire Day by KittandChips
genre/rating: Drama, Comedy, G
author's summary: Set between Force Bond 2 and 3. (highlight to read) Luke's birthday unfortunately coincides with the day his father hates the most: Empire Day.

s2m's comments: This one made me laugh so much, I had to include it in my reclist. XD

length: complete at 6 chapters, 49,168 words
setting: when Luke is 13
s2m's comments: I consider this fic as proof that politics can be both terribly exciting and terribly boring. Heh.

Force Bond: Family by KittandChips
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, G
author's summary: Set between Force Bond 2 and 3. (highlight to read) Vader decides to make a dramatic change in Luke's life, after both of them are forced to confront deeply held fears.
length: complete at 14 chapters, 86,949 words
setting: when Luke is about 16
s2m's comments: Just when I was about to call this boring and move on, the plot took a left turn that sucked me back in. Be sure to stick out the slow beginning! You'll recognize the turn when you hit it. ^^

Force Bond 3: Son by KittandChips
genre/rating: Drama, Adventure, PG
author's summary: (highlight to read) Third in the series of an AU where Luke is raised by Vader on Coruscant. Luke is getting older and struggling to come to terms with what awaits in the future.
length: complete at 15 chapters, 133,700 words
setting: when Luke is 17
s2m's comments: The interludes had their moments, but it's definitely good to return to the main Force Bond story! Things are really growing complicated in this installment.

length: complete at 5 chapters, 14,086 words
setting: starts after the end of Episode II
s2m's comments: This fic had me in stitches through all 5 chapters. Completely hilarious and fun! Some of you may not be old enough to appreciate Anakin's troubles, but one day...you will be. *leans forward, voice ominous* You will be. XD

Walk Like Men by Kenya Starflight
genre/rating: Adventure, G
author's summary: On his way to the Lars homestead, Obi-wan is ambushed and loses baby Luke. Luke is discovered and raised to adulthood... by Sandpeople.
length: complete at 27 chapters, 104,670 words
setting: AU before Episode IV begins
s2m's comments: The potential of this fic's unusual premise pulled me in, and I was not disappointed. I do wish the fic had explored more of the cultural shock that the characters would have experienced, but this is an action fic, not a drama. ^^; The fic starts off strong and lags some in the middle, but I was satisfied by the ending. This one did not over-use the crutch of following canon events that so often occurrs in AU.

Suns#ine (by McKin1ey)

Gyre by Sister Coyote
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: It may be over, but it's never really over. And there's more to Sunshine's gifts than she sees.
length: one-shot at 7,044 words
setting: a couple months after the book's ending
s2m's comments: This fic is written in Suns#ine's POV, like the original book, and Sister Coyote has captured the main character's tone perfectly. The baking, the conflicted characters, and the disturbing wrongness that is C0n are all here. Magnificent!! XD I only wish the fic had been written for me. *wistful sigh* (Yes, the typos are deliberate to avoid search engine results.)

length: one-shot at 1,355 words

genre/rating: drama, PG
author's summary: What would have happened if Anubis had convinced Ryu to come back with him?
length: one-shot at 3,700 words
setting: AU from about half-way through the anime
s2m's comments: This fic is beautiful, and the winter imagery is expertly used to convey Ryuu's emotions. I particularly admire how the author has changed the friendship between Ryuu and Kyuu to something darker, keeping them connected but in a painful way. The spot of humor is a great moment, too. ^^

author's summary: MOVIEVERSE Bumblebee goes to the cliff to find a young sparkling, and remembers the incident that brought it into being. No pairings
length: complete at 15 chapters, 41,923 words
setting: after movie 1 ends
s2m's comments: What the summary doesn't tell you is that the sparkling in question is actually Sam turned into an Autobot. XD An intriguing idea (to me, anyway) that is well-written and engaging. This fic does have some grammar problems, but they mostly clear up in later chapters.

Learning Curve by The Moonless Night
genre/rating: Comedy, G
author's summary: Movieverse The Autobots, warriors turned refugees, hide on earth in plain sight. Can they learn to get along with their new human neighbors, or will they ultimately be revealed by simple misunderstandings?
length: complete at 16 chapters, 40,676 words

length: one-shot at 800 words
setting: some point during movie 1
s2m's comments: I've never given much thought to how all those Transformers slash fics might handle the logistics of sex...particularly how this author chose to solve the problem. I couldn't stop laughing. XD Oh my!

s2m's comments: A touching drama, and my fave from Team Bonet's Treasure Planet goodfic stash.

Twilight

Condemned by That Vintage Dress
genre/rating: Drama, PG-13
author's summary: Finally you cry because you know that you will never escape from loving him. A different kind of Quil/Claire story.
length: one-shot at 3,346 words
setting: beginning when Claire is three years old, spoilers for book3
s2m's comments: Imprinting seems held in general good regard by fans, but this fic shows the darker potential. The creepiest thing for me is the emotions involved. Gaah! D=

The Movement of the Earth by audreyii_fic
genre/rating: Drama, R
author's summary: Jacob imprints on Bella. It changes things. A re-write of New Moon, beginning on page 242 in Chapter 10: "The Meadow."
length: complete at 17 chapters, 87,378 words
setting: AU from book 2, chapter 10
s2m's comments: I read this wanting a Team Jacob triumphant story, and ended up not only with that, but with a fascinating window into what it's like to change your writing style to someone else's--and a bad one, at that. Intentionally written in SMeyer's voice...but with intelligence. And really amusing author's notes. ^^

Fire of the Sun by audreyii_fic
genre/rating: Drama, R
author's summary: Sequel to The Movement of the Earth. Bella finds the cost of joining the supernatural world may be higher than she can pay.
length: abandoned WIP at 11 chapters, 16,811 words, though the author says two other writers will be continuing it. No chapters from them yet.
setting: follows from Movement of the Earth
s2m's comments: Imagine my pleasure when, despite much assurances from the author that a sequel would NEVER HAPPEN, a bunny attacked her (quite literally!) and here we are. :D Audreyii_fic handles the pack mind very very well.

Vampirates (by Jones)

Need and Murphy's Law after it, both on the same page, by ranty_rie
genre/rating: Drama, R for Need's, PG for Murphy's Law
author's summary: Need - Written because of a little theory I have, to reconcile vampires’ sensualist nature in lore creatures with Jones’ vamps, simply by adding a bit of hormonal overwork in there. Part of the disease, you know. Yeah. Please don't kill me. Murphy, really, please don't kill me.
author's summary: Murphy's Law - I don't doubt Murphy's ability to reach a bar first thing on land, I just can see Clyde being... Clyde. Silly, short, crack-y.
length: two one-shots, around 1500 words combined
setting: Need - not too long after Clyde's change. Murphy's Law - just before canon page 162
s2m's comments: How fortunate for me that the one bit of Vampirates fic I've found happens to be goodfic as well. Heeee. <3 Need is toe-curling and sweet, Murphy's Law is full of awwwws and Murphy teasing. *giggle*

Webcomics and online comics/manga

Awakened, The by SADCAT Sarah Anne Davis
genre/rating: Adventure, Horror, PG-13
author's summary: What if nothing were coincidence? What if every happy or horrible event that took place in your life was put there on purpose? What if it were all an experiment; a war game that has taken place on a hidden plane since the dawn of humanity? What if you woke to find yourself in the midst of it? What if everything you thought was true was, in fact, a lie?
length: WIP at 30 "rebooted" pages...yes, the author is completely redoing her comic from the start. T.T
setting: urban fantasy
s2m's comments: This comic is worth a read for two reasons: the unique situation of the main character and the enjoyable art. Whoa!

Boy Meets Boy by Sandra Fuhr
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, Comedy, R
author's summary: No official one, so allow me: Harley and Mik are a couple of guys very much in love...very unlike their circle of friends, who run the gamut of crushes, affairs, one-sided longing, desperation, and being manipulative and yet glorious bastards.
length: complete at 361 pages
setting: somewhere in the US, starting in mid 2000
s2m's comments: This was one of the first webcomics, and one of the first gay romance ones, too! The art is slow to improve, and the early strips are very episodic, but it's definitely worth sticking out. I suggest you at least read a couple weeks past the first set of guest art pages. You must meet Tybalt, for he is awesome. XD (that really is the first page of the comicc, it isn't a move notice!)

Candi - A College Story by Starline Hodge
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, R
author's summary isn't apparent, so I wrote one: Candi is an art student renting a room in a house with other students, trying to survive her life and maybe learning something useful along the way.
length: WIP at 1,345 pages
setting: present-day Florida
s2m's comments: This charming webcomic pulled me right from the start. The characters are engaging and the stories are fun! Candi's pissy art prof is my favorite. XD

Captain Estar Goes to Heaven by Winston Rowntree
genre/rating: Adventure, R, graphic violence
author's summary, shortened a bit by s2m: Shirley Estar has somehow ended up as an assassin for hire in a grim future society. The pay sucks but is only one of her many problems. One day she corners a guy who tells her an unbelievable secret.
length: complete at 170 pages
setting: the future, in space that's more like Firefly's gritty version than Star Trek's glossy or Star Wars' romantic ones.
s2m's comments: Don't let the stark opening page drive you away. This book sucked me in and to be honest, I'm not sure why. I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about the ending. Huh. I like how the story isn't all sunshine and predictable daisies. Don't read if you're looking to laugh. O.o

Cucumber Quest by Gigi Digi
genre/rating: Adventure, G
author's summary: Cucumber Quest is a comic about bunny kids going on adventures and having fun.
length: WIP at 130 pages
setting: a magical world that's like a cross between Candyland and Wonderland
s2m's comments: This comic is worth reading for both the fun story and the adorable art! The artist's style is quite unusual, and her knowledge of color theory is clearly shown. If you want something different and light, this one's worth a read!

DMFA: Dan and Mab's Furry Adventures by Amber M. Panyko
genre/rating: Comedy, Adventure, Romance, a little Drama, PG
author's summary: Welcome to DMFA, home to Dan and Mab and others of the cast, all in the magical land of Furrae, where anything can happen. Along with all their friends, there never seems to be a dull moment for these two.
length: ~1,612 pages, including the Abel side story
setting: Fantasy world where humans are mythical creatures
s2m's comments: This webcomic has a certain charm to it that sucked me in from the first few pages. Don't let the anthro characters deter you. These are people who just happen to have fur! Or feathers. Or scales. You get the idea. ^^ Like with other long webcomics, you can watch the artist's talents (and grammar...mostly) improve with time. Seriously, this one is definitely worth reading.

Digger by Ursula Vernon
genre/rating: Adventure, PG
author's summary: A wombat. A dead god. A very peculiar epic.
length: complete at 773 pages
setting: er...fantasy middle/age-y with some industrial era tossed in for fun. :B
s2m's comments: This comic is visually amazing. Seriously. It is truly wonderful to look at for its power. On the story, I can sum it up nicely: Digger is a realistic and pragmatic wombat who ends up becoming a key player in an epic involving past and current gods, prophetic slugs, a crazy religious disciple, a pack of anthromorphic hyenas, an innocent orphan demon child, and one village healer who is rather tired of patching Digger back together again. Good stuff!

Girl Genius by Phil & Kaja Foglio
genre/rating: Adventure, PG
authors' summary: Adventure, Romance, Mad Science!
length: WIP at 1,446 pages
setting: gaslamp fantasy, which apparently is a lighter version of steampunk
s2m's comments: This webcomic is brilliant, fun, creative, gorgeous to look upon, and always makes me smile. The writing and characterization are magnificent. I can't praise it enough! I LOVE the Jägers, they completely steal the show! X3

Goodbye Chains by Alice Hunt and Tracy Williams
genre/rating: Adventure, R
author's summary: Colin Lord is a cheerful Boston Communist, and Banquo White is a cranky half-Mexican with no philosophy beyond hedonism. Somehow they have become partners in crime, spreading a reign of terror and dialectical materialism across the plains of Colorado. Follow their adventures with explosives and ladies--and, possibly, men.
length: WIP at 443 pages
setting: America's wild west
s2m's comments: Goodbye Chains is rather unique, in my experience. Communism, bank robbing, women of questionable morals, and all the while Colin longs for Banquo who longs for women and money. This comic is fun, powerful at times, and is a breath of fresh air if you're tired of grown men acting like teenaged girls. And Colin has some really cracky dreams!! With suggestive breakfast plates. *wink*

House of Five Leaves by Ono Natsume
genre/rating: Drama, PG
official summary, shortened by s2m: Ronin Akitsu Masanosuke is skilled and loyal, but his naïvety always ends up getting him fired. Desperate for work, he becomes a bodyguard for a charismatic man named Yaichi. Despite his misgivings about Yaichi's business, the deeper Masa is drawn in, the more he finds himself fascinated by the people he now works with.
length: WIP at 29 chapters, ~850 pages. NOTE: chapters are taken down a month after they are available in hard copy book form, except for each volume's first chapter that acts as an online preview. I can't blame the publisher, since they do make it possible to read the entire series for free--and without ads--you just have to keep up with your reading.
setting: historical Japan, not too long ago. I guesstimate around the 1700s
s2m's comments: This one starts out very mild, but the characters quickly grabbed my attention. It's interesting to see a samurai hero not obsessed with fighting and the quest to become stronger. Yaichi is also quite intriguing, I can't blame Masa for his (platonic, alas) interest. This manga is licensed and serialized online--legally!

Johnny Wander by Ananth Panagariya and Yuko Ota
genre/rating: Comedy, PG
author's summary: Johnny Wander might be about life after college, being a kid, growing up and all the people you meet and all the things that happen in that brave new world. Or it might be about something else entirely.
length: WIP at 341 pages
setting: present-day US, with the odd fictional AU divergence
s2m's comments: 95% autobio and 5% fiction, this webcomic is funny, sweet, and a joy to read. I'm glad I gave it a try! XD

Lackadaisy by Tracy J Butler
genre/rating: Adventure, R
author's summary: It's about a gang of tenacious (if not shady) characters running a St. Louis speakeasy in the era of Prohibition. I suppose it falls somewhere in the realm of historical fiction, parody, dark comedy, and abject nonsense.
length: WIP at 111 pages
setting: St Louis in the 1920s
s2m's comments: Jaw-dropping artwork, a very different story, wannabe mobsters, flapper fashion, and insane gun-happy cats! What more could you possibly want??? XD

The Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal by EK Weaver
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, NC-17
author's summary, shortened by s2m: The agreement is simple: Amal does the driving; TJ pays the way - but a 3500 mile journey leaves plenty of time for things to get complicated.
length: WIP at 22 chapters, 246 pages
setting: the USA, 2008
s2m's comments: This webcomic reads very true to life. As with most webcomics, you can watch the artist's comicking skills improve--though in this case it isn't the drawing (which is always excellent) but the pacing and actual comic framing. A very good read! ^^ The scene involving Back to the Future won me over. I had such a dopey grin on my face...

Manly Guys Doing Manly Things by "Coelasquid" Kelly Turnbull
genre/rating: Comedy, PG
author's summary: Sometimes this is a comic about macho action heroes. Sometimes this is a slice of life comic about a time traveling Navy SEAL single dad from the nonspecific spacefuture. Really, it just depends on how things were going that day.
length: WIP at 105 pages
setting: modern America
s2m's comments: This webcomic is different from what I normally rec, but the main character is so engaging in his scruffy, down-to-earth way that I found myself reading the archives within a couple days and wanting more!

Menage a 3 by Giz and Dave Zero 1
genre/rating: Comedy, Romance, NC-17
author's summary: I can't find an official one, so allow me: Gary comes home one day and discovers his two (male) roommates are officially a couple and are moving out of their apartment to live together, forcing Gary to start a frantic search for new roomies so he can cover rent. He ends up finding two very attractive women with wildly different personalities.
length: WIP at ~550 pages
setting: modern-day Montreal
s2m's comments: This webcomic has the lucky combination of great writing, engaging characters, shiny art, and regular updates. Kyaaa! When I blazed through the archive I laughed on almost every page. XD I love how Gary and his friends easily show affection for each other. Awwwww. <:D

No Rest for the Wicked by Andrea L. Peterson
genre/rating: Adventure, PG-13
author's summary: One day, the Moon up and disappeared; where it went, or why, none can say. Without the Moon's light to keep them in check at night, monsters, crawling horrors, and other creatures of the dark run rampant throughout the land. But Princess November has much more pressing matters to worry about: she hasn't had a decent sleep in ages.
length: stalled WIP at 256 pages
setting: fairy-tale fantasy
s2m's comments: I like this take on the fairytale tropes! This is how Shrek wants to be. The art is engaging and the story addictive. Me likey! ^^V

Questionable Content by Jeph Jacques
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R
author's summary: Questionable Content is an online comic strip that is ostensibly about romance, indie rock, little robots, and the problems people have.
length: WIP at 2,090 pages
setting: modern-day America, I suspect Massachusetts.
s2m's comments: A purely character-driven story, which is why I like it. Marten, Faye, Dora, Raven, and others try to live their lives, listen to indie music, and sell lots of coffee. And then there's Pintsize. Don't let the early art turn you away, as the pages progress, you can watch Jeph's drawing improve before your eyes! It's kind of cool, actually. ^^

Rendez-Vous page 1 2 3 4 by David Gilson
genre/rating: Drama, Romance, R
author's summary, SIC: The story features a young dreamer parisian boy who falls in love with a gipsy homeless charming guy.
length: complete at 4 pages
setting: modern Paris
s2m's comments: This comic is as sweet as it is beautiful. Skillfully told without any dialogue or FX! I admit, I'm jealous of Mr. Gilsan's skills...

Self Reflection by chira-chira
genre/rating: Drama, G
author's summary: My eight-year-old self was so awesome.
length: one-shot
setting: at the artist's computer desk
s2m's comments: This comic makes me tear up every time I read it. I wonder if my 8 year old self would be like this...

Shortpacked by David Willis
genre/rating: Comedy, R
author's summary: Toys are serious business.
length: WIP at 1,562 pages
setting: modern-day San Francisco
s2m's comments: If you are a geek, then this webcomic is for you! A cast of geeks doing geeky things, drawn by a guy who isn't afraid to make fun of being a geek himself. Also with the odd hilarious movie parody! XD

Teahouse by emirain
genre/rating: Drama, Romance(?), NC-17, dub-con
author's summary: no official one, so allow me: The Teahouse is a brothel catering to the rich and staffed with 6 gorgeous escorts--4 of them men. Male and female customers both welcome!
length: WIP at 4 chapters, 92 pages
setting: a European(?) city AU with basic electricity but no motorized vehicles just yet. I think.
s2m's comments: This one is flat-out guilty pleasure. Gorgeous art, characters with distinct personalities, and a fun story still in the early stages. The potential is part of its appeal! :3

Templar, Arizona by Spike
genre/rating: Drama, NC-17
author's summary, shortened by s2m: Templar, Arizona is a story about a town that doesn’t exist, and the people who live there. This is a slightly irregular Arizona that fell off the back of a truck somewhere, and now all the power outlets are a weird shape and a couple of wars never happened. Templar’s populated with junkies, fuck-ups, pretty girls, millionaires, hockey teams, weird religions, dumb subcultures, and people in love. So it’s a lot like the cities you might already be familiar with, except the air there gives you Miner’s Lung and nobody has a cell phone
length: WIP at 587 pages
setting: present-day Arizona in a slightly off-kilter world
s2m's comments: This webcomic is a glory of subtle storytelling and character development. After I burned through it the first time, I turned around to read it again, and I picked up so much I'd missed before! The artist knows exactly where the story is going and the best path to take to reach it. Amazing world building and character development.

Vampirates by Jones in Space
genre/rating: Adventure, R
author's summary: Again, I can't find an official one, so here's my version: A teenager boards the Newfoundland ferry and is sucked into the world of vampires, piracy, and intrigue. (this next bit is by the artist) Yes. Canadian vampire pirates. I know it's hard to take, but work with me. We'll get through this together.
length: abandoned WIP at 261 pages
setting: present-day Canada, with a slight horror influence
s2m's comments: This web comic is well-written, surprising, and full of vampire bishounen. And who doesn't want vampire bishounen?? Rowr! :3 Jones, the mangaka, has a fun sense of humor, too. ^^V

I particularly love fantasy, sci-fi, and historical fiction. Webcomics recs are also great. I especially welcome lesser-known fic. ^^ Nothing wrong with the classics or BNF fare, but I know there's so much obscure!fic that deserves to be read. Seriously. I don't care who wrote it or how famous might be. If I like it, it goes up here! XD
